It's been a main-stay in the series since 1997. Regardless if it was advertised or not.
And for what it's worth, the PS1 port/version of Tales of Phantasia got multiplayer added in (with the use of the "Channeling Ring" items).
Oh!
And the Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology games on the PSP had multiplayer as well, via AdHoc. Certainly the first one did; I believe 2 and 3 had it as well.
I don't know. I always look for improved combat, characters, skits, mini games, worldbuilding, costumes, etc. Those were always mainstay features for me and the first things I look for in Tales games. Co-op never registered for me and if I were to halt my purchase because of that one missing feature? I'd be missing the whole point of the game. That's all we're trying to say, really.
I'd agree that none of the games really do any one of those things the best, but they do a lot of them better than most games.
Devil May Cry may have some good combat, but I find the story and characters lacking. Final Fantasy games are usually a visual treat, but they have been lacking in innovating their gameplay, and only now are they trying to and it's kind of a mess at least half of the time. I don't really think it's fair to universally praise Nier Automata's story. I know those who love it love it to death, which is awesome, but I don't think it's reached that kind of widespread impact and appeal to be lauded with a great story because it doesn't resonate with all that many gamers out there even amongst the RPG fans.
My point is, Tales may not be the "best" at anything, but they usually do a lot of things decently well. Most of them have pretty decent, if someone overly trodden, stories. Graphics may not be technically impressive, but aesthetically the games look great, and the gameplay is somewhat suffering FInal Fantasy's recent stagnation issue, but I'd argue what they have at least played better than what Final Fantasy did for years, and only now is Final Fantasy games starting to reach Tales level of engaging combat.
That being said, I still feel for everyone who enjoyed playing the games like that - I can totally get behind the disappointment of some long-time fans.
play & enjoy the story together
Exploring is more than 1/3 of the stuff you do in Tales games in it's exclusive to a single player - I don't see why I'd ever take that away from myself when there are games that let me play with friends 100% of the time we're playing it.
EDIT: And that's not even mentioning that the games aren't balanced around it and how co-op takes pretty much all the challenge out of the game. As I said, I only ever tried it with a second player but that already broke the game and made almost every single boss battle a cakewalk.
Again, it sucks for the people who do enjoy it and I don't get why they removed it - even if the combat system is part of it, the same was true for Xillia and they still kept it in.
Yes, except no. Maybe some time read what was inside the post before blowing up once you read the word "camera". The solo camera of Berseria doesn't have to change much to enable multiplayer, because the movesets of Berseria all work as long as you stay with a "top-down wide area". All you need to do is zoom out and not move. The camera of Arise cannot work this way, because Arise's movesets require the camera to follow the player around.
