Neither! There doesn't have to be some sort of motive or stance to take. I just wanted to share that the Writing was God Awful. My first post stated as much, "Buyer Beware" -- so the target audience is anyone who has not purchased the game yet and may wonder if the story is any good.
Otherwise, posting in the thread itself is more about sharing thoughts. Again, it's not as though my identity is dependent on people knowing my opinions. Nope. The story is god awful and I just like to talk about that subject! (I'm a writer, so it's what we kinda do.)
Cold Steel's story and writing is easily the WORST of the trails series. It's full of ridiculously over the top anime cliches (even worse than predecessors) and the story is stretched MUCH longer than it needs to be.
Don't get me wrong, the trails series is actually one my favorite series of all time, but please don't call Cold Steel the gold standard, because its easily the worst. Both crossbell and sky put it to shame
It's something I've come to loathe in Japanese games, which would otherwise be knocking the game out of the park in a home run. Some games are worse than others though. Was hoping it wasn't the case here but won't stop me buying it....but Bandai tend to put things on sale quickly, and I not long ago bought Scarlet Nexus which I haven't yet started that already had a 30% off on ps5.
But I don't mean this. I mean stuff like...
1) A character stating their name to their own minions.
2) A "mysterious female" held prisoner who has some insane power.
3) Characters who only appear to deliver exposition and then fade out of the story entirely.
4) Dialogue scenes between characters that don't explore the characters, but merely exchange information both characters should, and clearly do, already share common knowledge about.
1. is bad writing if it were a book but with a game that is fine for emphasis
2. not bad writing?
3. again bad writing if it were a book but filler characters for exposition isn't neccesarily bad writing by default in a game depends on how its handled
4. that's more so for the player, but this hasn't been a big issue in Arise but yeah that's annoying.
Easily the worst tales game i have played in terms of story so far. Everything else is great tho, good game overall imo.
When I played Tales of Graces f in a country house, I had no internet access. I just got interested in the game and started playing it. I was sucked in. As the game progressed, I felt that the narrative was awkward, but that did not stop me from getting a lot of enjoinment from completing the story, exploring the world, completing side quests, completing an additional dungeon, defeating strong enemies. And I still consider the ending of the additional epilogue to be the best happy ending in the series.
It seems to me that Graces f is poorly written, but it left a lot of positive impressions and prompted me to familiarize myself with other games in the series.
I think the title "Tales of ..." indicates that these stories should be treated as something like fairy tales, or some kind of epics. And the narrative of the games in the series is approximately reminiscent of such epics.
