Which is good because for some reason they make it so that Alphen's hair changes back to his iron mask / half-mask for 90% of the cutscenes.
Plus 2D allows for more fun and silly expressions, like Magilou's expressions in Berseria.
I fear that Arise won't be as humorous as previous ones...
2D just looks more alive.
I wanted to see more of characters looking like they do in openigs.
3D Expressions are bland.
2D ones allow for more fun.
Oh I completely agree on both fronts. I wish there was a middle ground where we can enjoy our cosmetics AND get good expressions.
Though one other tradeoff is while we don't get good expressiveness, we do get more dynamic posing.
Using 3D anime models for the movie was a terrible idea and it sticks out like a sore thumb.
There's a cutscene in the fourth area that was initially all 2D art, and then the crowd in it changes to 3D as the crowd ramps up. It really ruined the scene.
Such a middle ground does exist, Namco-Bandai just... didn't put in the effort this time 'round. The Trails of Cold Steel games use 3D models that are much more expressive, and I'd argue that the 3D models' expression in Zwei (II): The Ilvard Insurrection are just as expressive as 2D portraits would be--owing largely, I think, to the chibi style.
Sadly it won't work in Arise, as it tries to be "OH LOOK HOW SERIOUS I AM! Look how dark and cruel my plot is! I'm serious from the very beginning! Look, aliens conquered the planet! Look humans are slaves! I'm so serious, i'm not a kid's game! OHHH IM SO SERIOUS".
As in, i would've enjoy Arise as a serious game if i would be 10 years younger...
Except to me it looks now cringe. This kind of Anime plot just doesn't work well without some self-awareness and humor.
i have not played enouth yet.... but tales of xillia2's skit made me care and like the fat cat due to how well and expressive the drawing were.
Not sure i'll get the same thign in regards to the howl ..
