Also the only Tales of games that I completed so we'll see if it improves as I play through the other games.
Tales of Xillia 2 is my personal favorite Tales game though I personally only watched a friend playthrough it.

That's kinda the point. Berseria characters are good, and characters are part of a story. More goes into a story than just the main plot. Characters, side stories, pacing, villians, world building, continuity, etc, all these things play a part in building a story.
And thats where Berseria shines over Arise. The main plot of Arise is pretty interesting, but the way its told, the world building, and its bland characters, drive it into the dirt.
well part of the rush is shionne xD but youre 100% wrong about the characters joining just to join. each one had a reason to join with the party with their own motives as well. did you just skip through the story??
