Primitive mode is not fun.
So my partner and I just tried the Primitive mode for Ridgeview court and boy was that an unfun experience. Not being able to do 4 out of 7 bits of evidence just made it a slog.
So our ghost was a Yurei, we found the freezing temps and its room. It was consistantly blowing out candles, which told us it might be a Mare. But then we were in the room with it, and it manifested somewhere else outside of the room, we could barley hear the singing, so we looked at eachother and went 'Twins.' So we marked it and left.
It was a Yurei.
We were using candles for light so we couldnt see any sanity effects, and we had no way to check 2 out of the 3 bits of evidence. Its just an unfun mode as is.

Challenges are harder by design, that's why they are a challenge, if you don't like it, then don't play it. Simple

if your upset over a challenge mode that has ZERO risk to playing, that is your own fault for not having sufficient knowledge of all the ghosts and the mechanics.

granted even the best players get tricked by a ghost every once in a while but the difference is they dont allow themselves to get mad over it. i honestly cant comprehend how anyone could get mad at the game for them getting the ghost wrong.

we all had matches like that at some point, just move on and laugh about it later instead of letting it ruin a game you paid for.

in all honesty you where probably just unlucky enough for the ghost to change rooms right before doing a event but also you should have done a basic twins check to make sure.

Okay now I've actually gotten a look at Primitive.

It's got like a five minute setup time and super strong sanity restoration with the pills.

So even if you dont' got any electronics - this is basically on Amateur. Remember how I thought earlier we didn't have an Intermediate difficulty challenge... hey, this fits I'd say.

There's also an Ouija Board to help tank sanity, so you don't need to stand around forever just to get a hunt.

I recommend arming yourself with knowledge about non-evidence ghost behaviors (on the wiki or some other knowledgebase) before tackling challenge mode, because challenge mode will very rarely allow you to solve the ghost in standard fashion by using the 7 hard evidence equipments. I know you don't like the "it's challenge mode, what do you expect?" response others have given, but it's true, it's a mode generally aimed at those with deeper knowledge of game mechanics than a beginner/intermediate player. In comparison, if I never played Dark Souls before and I got through the first tutorial area of Dark Souls, then decided "you know what? I'm gonna challenge myself to play the rest of this game without wearing any armor!" it's not unreasonable for me to have a "not fun" experience with that game too... obviously. And everyone would laugh at me for complaining that I didn't have fun, and I would deserve it.

I assume the "not fun" experience you're encountering is because you believe that there was a need to make a coinflip guess somewhere along the way, which is not the case (and never is, except on certain extreme difficulties like Apocalypse III). Even on custom difficulties with zero evidence given, you can always (with enough patience) determine all 24 ghost types by their in- and out-of-hunt behaviors.

I personally thought Primitive mode was a great "puzzle" type of gamemode. Needs some brain power and thinking skills to complete it! You had 3 evidence types available to check for (freezing, fingerprints, and writing) and even a 4th evidence type in EMF5 if you know a bit of game knowledge to understand how to read the activity monitor for EMF5. But even without that knowledge, let's dissect your game.

Given the 5-minute grace period, you already know this was an Amateur ghost, which does not hide any evidence (meaning you can cross off the evidences you don't find, as I believe you did). With this, you tick/cross-out available evidence, and from there you're left with a 2~4 ghost types to choose from. In this case, with YES to freezing and NO to writing and fingerprints, your journal will tell you it's either a Yurei, Oni, Twins, or Onryo. And from here, you can narrow it down to the exact ghost type given its non-evidence behaviors.

Onis are very visible during hunts and rarely "blink" out, and the Twins have a slightly faster/slower walking speed during hunts than regular ghosts (depending on which "twin" is hunting), so these two could be crossed off just by evaluating one hunt. Finally, lighting a candle overtop a crucifix and seeing the crucifix burn before the candle goes out would give away that it wasn't an Onryo, as Onryos treat candles like crucifixes (and always prioritize using them vs real crucifixes). There was always a path to come to the conclusion that your ghost was, without a doubt, 100%, a Yurei.

N.B.: All ghost types will instantly teleport up to 10 meters (without walking) to perform a Ghost Event (or "manifestation") nearby a player, which is why it seemingly walked into the room with you then evented elsewhere, as if it were a "Twin".

I am not sure why you think this has to do with skill?

I didnt like no evidence mode (May as well use custom difficulty for that and get more fun).

Oh, and the fact its always on amateur too.

The fact we have to do it three times, makes many challanges a chore. Not fun, unfun, for 3k in game currency. But instead of me spending an hour doing that, I could simply go for an x6 on CU and get it done in the same time.

Doesnt change the fact that most of these arnt even fun and dont add anything.

Where'd you get that info? This week's challenge is set to Professional presets, and the Sanity Survival challenge from some time back literally indicated in its description that it was using Nightmare presets. They all vary per challenge, it's not always Amateur...? Are you confused by the hardcoded 1x rewards for all challenges?

Viridi is correct - the actual preset behind each challenge changes on a week by week basis, but the reward multiplier is clamped to a x1 because "Item Loss on Death" is always enabled.

When Primitive Mode was around, the setup timer was a full five minutes and the pills healed I think 40%, which are indicators one would find on Amateur. However, we have literally had a challenge say we were playing on Nightmare in a previous week, but the reward multiplier was still x1.

So really the actual lesson to learn here is that the difficulty of the challenge cannot be reflected in the actual difficulty modifier, but rather in the settings its playing under, and whether or not deduction will be forced by the gimmick of the week. In Primitive Mode, it was Amateur but involved forced deduction skills... which put it on par for what I would consider the challenge level for those with an "intermediate" level of skill - it was actually quite a nice environment for those to start learning how to use behavioral evidence and the ghost traits (like their hunting speed) to deduce what they were dealing with.

But Primitive Mode has been done and gone for two weeks now... haven't even been on to see the current weeks challenge. Really the takeaway is thus: don't judge how annoying a mode is by it's description alone, and given you don't lose items... no reason to not try something new every week. If it's not a challenge you think will be fun, then pass on it... you'll probably have more fun earning that three grand through normal play instead of the challenge.

These should not be ' tutorials' as you claim in parts of your post. You have an outdated training mode for that, blergh. May as well keep them in game forever, which we allready been over that.

Of course not - I'm saying that challenges have and will continue to provide various levels of challenge. It's like I said previously - some are going to be super easy like Speedrun was... and some will be true tests of player skill like how the No Sanity/Evidence was. Primitive mode was, by my own comparison and using those two as benchmarks... pretty much in the middle.

The fun in these is getting to try something new... something you'd probably never have done even in custom... with zero risk. Some are not going to jive with some people... like this one did with the OP, and as far as I'm concerned... that's perfectly fine.
