<90 sec smudge timer and not a demon or mimic
I was playing on edgefield (0 evidence). The ghost started from the master bedroom upstairs, moved to the kids bedroom, then to the foyer (the front door) then to the dining room. we never were around for much of it's events and while it hunted us we didn't have the luxury if testing and so i go down stair at the end of the like 4th hunt to look for something like blinks or LOS etc. I met it at the bottom and smudged it, it waddled up the stairs for like 3-4 secs and the hunt ended. I actually remembered to start my LiveSplit timer to test for demon/spirit. At a 1:18 (actually 1:14) on the timer i have a crucifix burn in the room as I'm looking for orbs. I quickly rush to the van with my one surviving friend, RIP to the van princess. "it's a demon!" we lock it in and head out. it was the Oni... Sadly it being 1:30AM we call it a night on a L. I use NVIDIA to capture a shadow play recording and review. NO WAY i blundered that timer. I was correct, I smudged it at 00:06:33 and it burnt that crucifix at 00:07:47. It being so late my brain hurt to do simple math and so i pull up LiveSplit and time the video lol. 1:14 on the spot. Looking back at the like 4-5 events across the like 15-20 min... i could've looped it on the couch and seen the oni blink... but who the hell isn't gonna lock in demon after a 74-78 sec smudge test while you cleared the area for orbs on a 0 evidence run.

Can you upload the video somewhere?
Could it be that one of you already hit it with a smudge but forgot it? If the ghost is currently under a smudge timer, smudging it again won't reset it, it keeps the earlier timer. Another explanation is you hit the ghost while being on the stairs. Smudging on stairs bugs out sometimes.

looking back at the video i can't tell exactly but i'm pretty sure my friends smudged the ghost earlier in the hunt and i didn't realize it. i did a hypothetical timer of when i think he might've and the 90 second rule checks out. i also thought the second smudge reset the timer. learning experience. ty
