which ghost does it end up being tho? if you compare your collected evidence with the ghost the game said it was, you ll see which of your evidence was wrong
for the things you listed right now, typical user errors would be:
- seeing your breath does not mean freezing temps, it just means <5°C, for freezing temps you actually need to use a thermometer
- you need to see an actual ghostly figure in dots for it to be dots, if you just see a random cloud in the dots its just your breath, and if you see something moving super fast in the dots its just an item being thrown
- spirit box will light up a specific light on the box if it got a correct responds, like T1 has a ghost symbol, T3 will light up the row of LEDs that typicaly blink red in white instead
(there are also unrelated events in which you can hear the ghost that could randomly coincide with you using the spirit box, like a ghost event where the ghost sings "Ring around the rosie", this does not count for spirit box)
The part I bolded above is where you failed. Marking off evidence you don't see is dangerous in leading you down the wrong path. Especially if you do that with ghosts like Obake and ultraviolet. You also didn't say which difficulty you are playing on. If you are marking off evidence you don't collect and playing on nightmare or harder you are really screwing it up yourself.
I don't think anyone is calling you stupid, they do seem to genuinely be trying to help figure out where your issue is coming from. I handle the bug reports for the devs, and can hopefully offer some constructive info. There are no current issues with ghosts giving wrong evidence, as has been looked into by the Devs many times. What we do see happen, and is reported 'with proof' many times over is things that appear to be evidence, that are not. I'll give a few examples.
- If the ghost flips the tier 1 book over, the pencil is no longer visible because it's now under the book. People with low graphic quality or people who only look for the missing pencil will mark writing in the book, and thus be incorrect.
- People who report seeing DOTS with non DOTS ghosts have provided proof such as breath, light reflections, and even ghost events that simply walk through the dots.
- If an EMF reader is malfunctioning (or the subsequent emf 4 after an event) and bounces to emf 5, that does not count. You can only get emf 5 evidence from normal emf 2 or 3 interactions and not while equipment is malfunctioning or from ghost events. People will also go by the board in the truck to 'verify' emf 5 and that also is not reliable to confirm emf 5 evidence.
- Still some people will believe the have freezing when they see their breath, and of course, we know this is not the case any longer.
- Sometimes evidence takes a long time to get, such as freezing (this is a big culprit). Because people do not see the freezing, they will cross it off, and go with another evidence instead thinking they are just having bad rng on say emf for example. Ruling out an evidence is often not a solid way to confirm another evidence. It helps, but should not be considered definitive.
- Many things in the maps are shiny and reflect in video cams looking very much like orbs. There are some weather leaks here and there that also let snow fly into a room occasionally which very much look like orbs. This is often mistaken as orbs. In addition, people will check quickly for obs and rule it out early on. Since orbs will path through things like dressers, beds, even cars, it's best to check many times for orbs throughout the investigation.
- Evidence that has been provided regarding 'the ghost didn't leave fingerprints' but wasn't an obake has been due to people having the custom setting for fingerprint chance turned down, or they have checked the wrong door, wrong side of the door, etc. For feet, the ghost may step in salt and not leave feet if it doesn't continue walking after. This is normal, but not clear if you are not aware, so people rule out fingerprints early on and are wrong.
- Not evidence based, but another 'misidentified ghost' that people report often is banshee because they've heard the scream on the mic, but it turns out not to be a banshee. In each of these cases it was the mic catching the tail end of something that sounded like a scream, such as crucifix burning, or squeaky shower turning on/off. There is also a loud scream in sunny meadows that the mic pics up that sounds similar and often reported/mistaken as banshee scream.
I have almost 10,000 hours in game, and have been guilty of looking at things a little too quickly myself even. It's not a matter of being dumb, or not knowing how to play, or skill. It's just some things are deceiving at a quick glance.
The reason it's asked to provide evidence of the situation is because so far, all reports have been simply misidentified evidence and if someone DOES have proof they would be the absolute first to provide it. As the devs have looking into this many many times and found no issues, proof would be very useful.
Sorry for the long post, but I hope it helps.
I believe they are doing exactly this for future updates. Adjusting the EMF so that even when malfunctioning it wont bounce over 5, and continuing to fix weather leaks when found etc I've brought up the tier 1 writing thing with the pencil not being visible if ghost flips it as well. They are quite receptive to feedback and often do their best to make adjustments. I imagine at least some of this will be addressed in the next equipment adjustment update as well. Being early access, and a small dev team, the game will go through a lot of changes for the better. Thank you for taking the time to discuss.
