Goryo Changed Rooms?
Throughout my experience with this game, I figured that the Ghost not changing favorite rooms was a core concept of a Goryo, and have often identified a Goryo by the fact that it doesn't change its favorite room. However, I was live-streaming earlier and had a Goryo that spawned on top of me when it's original favorite room was the Master Bedroom [Tanglewood]. Is this a bug? Is not changing favorite rooms not what identifies a Goryo? Is it affected by custom settings? I'm completely lost.

Any chance of a link to the VOD where it happened? How far away did it spawn on you? Did it recently do a ghost event? Lots of possible questions.

But to give some information that may clarify things:
  • No, Goryo's cannot change their favorite room.
  • However, This does not mean they are intrinsically bound to and unable to leave said room.
  • Goryo's can in fact roam outside their room- But they're limited to 'short' roams, while other ghosts are capable of medium/long roams as well.
  • Any ghost can leave their favorite room; Their favorite room is just the room they return to after any roaming session and where they teleport to at the end of any hunt.
  • There is an invisible entity that actually roams around the map, same way you walk around, it does too.
  • A hunt will begin wherever this invisible entity is at the time it is triggered; Specifically, the ghost will decide to hunt, then 3 seconds later initiate the hunt and become immobile/blind/deaf for the duration of whatever grace period you have, after which it becomes mobile and able to see/hear/kill you.
  • Ghost events can be triggered at a decent range from the ghost.
  • Ghost events actually teleport the invisible entity to the spot where the ghost event occurred.
  • Because the ghost is teleported to that location, it can begin a hunt from that location after the ghost event ends.
  • The ghost event can pick any random location within a certain range of your character to place the ghost.
  • In ghost events where the ghost is mobile, the invisible entity will be at the location the visible ghost ended during the event. That includes mist-ball events.

With all this in mind, It's entirely possible in a small house for a Goryo to throw you for a loop- If it short roams and happens to get into ghost event range of you, it can then ghost event to your location. The ghost is now in the same room as you and if it now initiates a hunt, it will appear near you, or potentially on top of you if your luck is bad.

Most notably, the fact that ghost events teleport the ghost to that location means that any time you have a ghost event, be aware that it's very possible for the ghost to hunt from that general area for the next 15-30~ seconds until it's roaming period ends and it returns back to it's room.

And also notable, None of this requires the ghost's favorite room to change. The ghost can roam from it's favorite room, and it's ghost event can carry it even farther than it would normally go.

TL;DR: Pending additional information like the vod itself where I and other users can watch the events occurring in sequence, It's hard to say definitively whether your ghost bugged or if what happened was to be expected because of the information outlined above. But, Yes, it's absolutely possible and plausible for a goryo to spawn on top of you even if you're not in it's favorite room at the time.

Ghost event at 1:36:26, So now the ghost is in that little dining area temporarily, Hunt begins at 1:36:52. So pretty much exactly what I outlined above- The ghost didn't Change room, It just roamed close enough to you, ghost evented near you, and then hunted before it's roaming timer ended to send it back to it's room.

You did make some decent conclusions on ruling out, You were just missing that extra bit of information that I explained before. :winter2019happyyul: (I added one more line to that btw, so go read it.)

I knew Goryos could roam, I just didn't expect it to be able to roam from Master Bedroom all the way to kitchen/dining room. Guess I just got Phas'd.

Ehehe, Yeah. It's not so much that the goryo can roam that far, it's that the ghost event teleport tripped you up.

To pose some example values,
Say that a Goryo can wander 10m from it's room.
Say that a ghost can initiate a ghost event on a target up to 15m away
Say that the ghost can be placed within 5m of the player when it events

And the sum result is that under the most ideal of circumstances under these example values, A goryo can end up a whopping 30m away from it's room, 3x as far as it can roam, by wandering 10m, initiating an event on a player 15m away, and then placing itself 5m behind them.

Can definitely catch you off guard. Always gotta be careful when an event occurs and moves the ghost. :)

So look for it to go back to the same room after a hunt initiated after an event. Got it.
