Because from what I'm reading up on now, you might have bamboozled yourself here... The hunt prevention timer from the smudge effect starts ticking down from when it is applied, NOT from when the hunt ends
That can actually be used to confirm a Spirit because if you smudge it and don't get hunted, and then smudge it again just seconds before the 3 minutes are up, the Spirit would be able to hunt right away where any other ghost would have a new timer applied.
But if you're not aware of that that can throw you off.
