identifying a Mare?
Is there some reliable way to identify a Mare? I find it to be one of the hardest ghosts to identify with 0 evidence

Like everything the Mare does, other ghosts can do it also

Nothing 100% definitive. Mares prefer the dark, so if you find things happening more in darkened rooms instead of lit rooms it could be a mare. Mares also like popping light bulbs, so if a lot of that happens it could be a mare.

While any ghost can potentially turn the lights off right after you turn them on, a mare will do so more often. But that doesn't rule out any other type of ghost just being more active than usual.

The only thing that is certain is that a mare can not turn on a light. So if that happens, you at least know that mare isn't one of the possibilities.

to add to the above, as far as I know the other ghosts can only accidently turn off lights right after you turned them on, while the mare has a decent chance to directly target the light switch right after you turn on lights next to the mare

so if you know the ghosts favorite room you can just flip the light switch in it every 10+ seconds and see if the ghost instantly flips it off multiple times
if it happens only once it might just be coincidence, if it happens more then once its extremely likely that its a mare

(if you try this dont flip the switch more frequent then once every 10 seconds, cause the mare wont respond to spamming the light switch)

The light switch dealio with the Mare is proximity based like the Spirit Box, along with the 10-second cool down. It has to be within 5 or 6 meters(?) of you flipping the switch to potentially trigger a response.

That plays a big part in getting the Mare ability to work too. Odd spots like Tanglewood's basement, despite it being a small map. That switch is at the top of the stairs, away from the main cellar.

Mare tests work the best in small, confined rooms. If the ghost room is not small, then you can rule out the other ghosts with process of elimination. The way that I identify mares is that they have nothing special about them.

Thats literally what i do, process of elimination
And even then im still having trouble because this ghost has no personality at all :(((

Unforuntately the only 2 ways are to check the sanity monitor (if you have it active) or flipping lightswitches and hoping you get the ability. If you have a Mare in a big room then my recommendation is to keep the lights on in hopes it roams out of the room.

Still got 50/50 with Goryo there, or 33% if you have a boring Yurei.

Mares attack much more often when the lights are off in their surroundings. If you're doing a no evidence run, best way to figure it out is to start a hunt or two with the lights on then see if anything changes with the lights off.

The sanity is at 0 by default

I don't know what you mean by this. Sanity starts at 100 unless specified by challenge mode & insanity mode.

i mean i play custom difficulty, with a x11.60 multiplier, so the sanity is at 0 by default at the start

The only thing that changes is, that its hunt threshold is 60 % in the dark and 40 % in the light. But if you're under those 40 %, then it will hunt identically often, no matter if it is in the light or the dark.

That's pretty much the reason for why you've such problems finding it then. The reliable way to identify a Mare is simply the 60 %-threshhold. 0-Evidence is mostly balanced around you having access to these sanity tests, so locking yourself out of it can and will make things more difficult or time consuming

And the Yurei-Goryo-Mare-combination is one of it that requires more waiting than any other combination, since with 0 sanity you now need to wait for Yurei- door touches, Mare-light switch ability or a verified room change. You can also go off of chances, for example mares are more likely to switch lights off or breaking them and if you ever see it switching a light on, then it's not a Mare. For Goryo the only thing to test for if it ever changes the ghost room, so it's just a waiting game, same for Yurei, where you've to wait for it to do the yurei door touch, which can take quite some time.
