Agreed. It's a shame they don't let players go back and play an old version of a map. Especially the old asylum, with all the new items it would have been more bearable and less slow to find the room, even if the whole map felt like a maze.
Unfortunately, the old map was more or less entirely made with them... so it had to go.
Please, Asylum was my favorite map in the game. It still saddens me to this day that it was removed. Much of the fun I had in phasmo was on that map. Game just hasn't felt the same since. It was the only true large map, and I was content in having my one map. At least prison and high school are still really fun (for now).
The licences for the assets they purchased do not expire to my knowledge (nor should they, with some like High School being $255 just for a single map). It does not matter who made the maps. They are fun. I understand the pride in saying everything was made from scratch (or close to it), but if it must be at the expense of the player, then I, respectfully, have my disagreements.
Yeah. I didn't think so either. I've worked in unity and have never seen a licence that expires. I think it's just people trying to think of a possible reason to justify or understand why content that is loved by many (albeit not all) would be removed from the game when it's been in since launch.
The maps fit so well, and helped build it up to the awesome reputation it has now. When people see the maps on the asset store they don't go "oh wow, the dev used pre-made assets" (which is a very normal thing in game development). They go "oh wow! It's the phasmo map!" Which is how you know the game has been so successful. People identify the assets with the game. Not the game with the assets. It's a win/win for everyone. I'm sure the asset creators love it because they probably got a huge boost in sales when Phasmophobia came out.
Beyond that, too soon for me to tell.
We call those people "confidently incorrect".
People who don't know jack about a subject talking like they're experts.
