-Depending on your graphics, you might be able to adjust some settings
-Same for your monitor. Mine has a GAMMA setting that helps me with this game. I do have to reset it afterwards because it makes all other games too bright.
-Force yourself to explore the maps with no flashlight, at least once. You will find areas of natural and ambient light on every map that can be genuinely useful. Turn on friendly ghost setting for this if you want; thats what this setting is for.
-Lastly is just, time. The more you play the maps, the more familiar they become. Trust me.
The only exeption to this is a *very* small circle of light directly around your player, probably meant to represent what your player can 'feel' directly around them. this is rather dim, the best way to check is when entering a building and crouching, can you see the floor directly below you dimly? if yes, you should have decent settings for you. if no, then the settings definitely need adjusted.
Additionaly, the torches (A.K.A flashlights) have different effective ranges. the T1, IIRC, cannot reach the end of tanglewoods first hallway, and emits this somewhat dim yellow-ish light. T2 is better, in both range, colour (its a nice white-ish) and range. as for T3, Have not reached there yet.
and on the subject of building lights - each map has an electrical breaker box, which must be turned on before the building has power *(1). no power = no lights, so if the light-switch does not work, try the breaker.
(1) except easy, this difficulty has it set to 'on' at the start
TL;DR: game is not designed for the dark areas to be seen, requires use of tools/objects to light up. and good luck on your ghost hunting adventures!
When you hit Tier 3 on the headwear it has built in night vision which is awesome it really helps me!
The Tier 3 flashlight/torch helps a lot!
And the house maps will usually have candles around on tables, nightstands, etc. Just check you'll find them and they help a little.
