To give you the short version - when the ghost decides to hunt they basically ask "Is there a crucifix near my current position?" If the answer is yes, then they take a charge from it instead of hunting.
It's beneficial to account for roaming as best as you can because of this, especially in smaller rooms that you only need one crucifix to cover.
It should also be noted that, after The Twins begin a hunt successfully... they flip a coin. if it lands on the "Fast Twin", they teleport to their last ability use... which can be within Crucifix range, effectively appearing like they bypass it.
Another weird thing happened with a rev, that changed his room from the first floor toilet on new bleasdale, all the way to the back room in the attic. Really surprised me.
I thought it's all weird effects of the event bunnies. Like campfires starting to burn on their own on maple, right under the heavy rain.
