Be aware that if you see Ghost Orbs in addition to other evidence, you should also check for Mimic. If you get more evidence than is possible, it probably is a Mimic. It's the only time the evidence will steer you wrong because the Mimic copies other ghosts abilities.
One of your methods in addition to gathering evidence is to learn what to rule out without the evidence. For example.
A Wraith doesn't step in salt so you can set salt at areas you know it will roam through.
A Jinn can't turn off a breaker, but it can overload it by turning on too many lights, so this is a longer test but helpful if confirmed during investigation.
The airball hiss event rules out an Oni. (I always hear Impulse saying "Not an Oni" after them).
Grab some equipment (typically flashlight, and your choice of 2 evidence items - EMF, Temp, video camera, UV, etc).
Enter the house, find the breaker and turn it on if it's off.
Turn on some lights.
Search the house for the ghost. It has a favorite room that it will be in most of the time.
Gather evidence.
Once you have identified the ghost, return to the truck and leave.
The end of game screen will tally up your contract, tell you how much money you earned, what they ghost type is, and, if you click on the tabs up top, will tell you all sorts of information about what the player and ghost have done. Check them out.
