Aside from maps/difficulties being locked or not, there's no particular harm or benefit to beginning on prestige 1 or beginning from 0.
But other than that, there's nothing that really need to be done here. You can just keep playing the game normally.
2. They may have tried playing it off a family library sharing from an account that had the game. If they played and had a save file from prior to the recent progression reset, they'll have Prestige 1 and an armband with their level on it.
