But if you recognized special door shuttings, it can be a Yurei. The Yurei has a special ability it can do, that will give you also a sanity hit if you see it (about 10-15% if I recall it correctly). It is when a room door is directly getting slammed shut (not slowly falling into the door angle, but directly and fast to a full shut) without a hunt or a ghost manifestation at all.
When I see this, I always keep the Yurei in mind (and the sanity loss you and your friends might gotten), and if the evidences lead to him, it is most likely. When you notice another slam shut without an event/hunt, you can be nearly 100% sure it is the Yurei.
The Yurei special ability will fully close a door.
Mares can't turn lights on, but can turn them off and will do so more frequently than other ghosts will.
I know all ghosts can but that particular ghost switched off lights in multiple rooms and doors in the area at the same time they did a ghost event and started hunting, not just one or two doors and lights at different times - it did many lights and doors all in one go and was able to repeat that a number of times instant door shutting and lights off across three or four rooms.
None of the ghosts can shut all the doors and turn off all the lights across three or four rooms and hunt at the same time. If all that is happening you are probably playing with a hacker.
And the worst thing you could get is a hunt directly after an event. Keep an eye on the ghost and if it disappears, but is still hearable, then it's most likely the grace period already for an upcoming hunt.
But is the Yurei the only one capable of slamming a door shut, or is it just a higher probability?
Every ghost can touch the door, but it closes only like a third of the way. It might get fully closed, if it is already nearly closed, but only the Yurei ability is strong enough to fully close the door in any position. It also drains 15% sanity, when it does that, so you might also want to check that, if you roguhly know your current expected sanity (especially if you're unsure, if it really was a Yurei slam). And you might be able to hear it as well, since the closing sound lags behind a littlebit (~2 seconds)
So if you need to check for a Yurei, make sure that you fully open all doors around you. Also keep in mind, that it can close the front door that way as well.
