Like, Outlast? Beat both Outlast 1 & 2 and it never even gave me heebie jeebies. Lot of people think it's a horror filled game though. Strangely though, Doom 3 from way back in the day did me in... The atmosphere was incredible, the way sounds would come from behind you making you look thinking it's an enemy only for an enemy to drop down on top of or behind you, stuff like that..
Dead space was one of my favorite horror-y games, but it never really 'scared' me, It never really kept me on edge and tense. Lots of disturbing imagery that probably should have been scary, but it just wasn't for me. Alien Isolation on the other hand I never even got to the point where the alien can spawn because I was so tense and jumping at every little noise.
Amnesia never bothered me, none of the RE games did either. Soma was just weird, Clock tower was strange but fun, fatal frame, Rule of Rose- FNAF is startling because some attacks just come out of literally nowhere.. Could list a lot more. All fun games, but not scary to me. Startling in some cases; Or shocking... But not scary. Not a 'horror' filled experience to me.
For me personally, Atmosphere is king. If you can craft and maintain a good atmosphere that can lure the player into it, it will be scary- And Phasmophobia is one of those games. The constant dull roar when you're in the house instead of total silence, the sheer randomness of it, the fact that the ghost is an actual entity in the game world that I can't see, so when it throws something behind me or between me and the door all my danger senses go off, etc.. Phasmophobia does atmosphere very well. So well that even after hundreds of hours it can still draw me in. Yet, I still don't think it's the 'best' horror game... And I'm not sure what I would say is the best either. Just, it's not Phasmophobia.
Some say Silent Hill 2 is the best, some others think Amnesia is, or P.T., or Resident Evil remake, etc.
But by "we" I assume you are looking for more horror games with multiplayer modes, Demonologist and Forewarned are some of the games that I would think you might enjoy, even Boo Men seems particularly fun with others, albeit goofier.
Phasmophobia is quite good in being quite atmospheric at the beginning, but the fact, that it is rather RNG dependend makes the fear go away relatively fast, since all you need to do is to remember how the events and hunts works. And given that things can't be planned, it is hard to plan the atmosphere ahead. Some beginners might be jumpscared a lot by events, others might get killed a lot and some others might not really see that much happening for a long time.
On the flipside, Phasmo implements some puzzle mechanics with the evidences and ghost abilities, as well as offering many ways to play the game in a wide variety of difficulties, that its replayability is one of the best, especially for a non-PvP-game.
As for other games, that mostly depends on what you want to see. Still keeping it to the same genre (ghost investigations)
- Ghost Exiles is most likely the closest, as it implements many ideas of Phasmo, but it adds exorcism on top of it. It can get really crazy though with the exorcism, so it's definitely a new experience. They recently even added a small roboter, which can bring you stuff, which definitely makes playing solo way easier^^
- Demonologist got many fame lately to be the most scary Phasmolike game due to all the jumpscares in it and they're definitely putting tons of work into each map, however, many events doesn't really relate to the ghost, so that's something you need to like on top of the investigation
- MetaPhysical goes down the Supernatural path (like the TV series with many references like the car or bobby^^). It's a littlebit more action packed and offers a wider variety of ghost types. They're also adding a play as the ghost-mode, if that's interesting to you.
- and Ghost Exorcism Inc, which again is more action packed and goes full ham on technical stuff with even adding a neutrino gun.
- also if you're interested in singleplayer, then Conrad Stevensons paranormal PI is definitely recommended. It doesn't include deadly hunts like Phasmo and similar games, but rather tries to be more realistic as well as addind story and many background infos
Though out of all of them, i would say that Phasmobhobia is the most polished game as of now, which got its gameplay loop nailed down already, while the others are still trying to define their gameplay a littlebit
These are amazing suggestions. I will check out all of them. They do need to be multiplayer for myself, wife and son. As far as what I want...it's just to be scared.
***P.S. The son is young. So Outlast is too much blood for him. He's pretty tough, but not into something as gross as Outlast.
***P.P.S. What does "fnaf" stand for?
Five Nights At Freddy's.
