What ghosts can ignore the time countdown?
A group of friends and I just played a challenge game and with 2 minutes left on the timer the crucifix prevented a hunt. We assumed it would be a demon because I remember only demons ignored the sanity and time frames but I could be wrong because it was actually a deogen. Can someone let me know if I was mistaken?

Ghosts normally cannot hunt at all within the 5/2 minute grace period(the timer in the truck that applies to Amateur/Intermediate/Custom setting). There isn't any exception. Using cursed items however can end the timer prematurely.
Demons are an exception (their ability can trigger and force a hunt instantly, though it's rare to see it in the first few seconds, but it can happen). Yokai can hunt at 80% temporarily if you are talking too much around the ghost (if silent, its threshold returns to 50%), and some ghosts have special things that relate to their hunts (such as Banshee, which only considers its target's sanity when they are in the house, not the entire group).

Okay so we used the Ouija Board for the Primitive challenge, so that was definitely a possibility. But it definitely hunted in less than 3 minutes and ended up being a deogen. So using a cursed object can make the timer null?
Using/activating any cursed item will prematurely cause an end to the setup period, but on the upside, having a ghost hunt is often a good way to help ID it, so this is not always a bad thing (and does not matter at all on harder difficulties).

For more info, I would suggest looking here: https://phasmophobia.fandom.com/wiki/Hunt

The same wiki also has detailed info on every ghost, which can help clear up a lot of confusion.

Edit: I do also feel I should ask...when someone used the Ouija Board, did they say "Goodbye" before walking away? If they did not, the board would have shattered and caused a cursed hunt, which changes a lot of the rules

It could be a Thaye too, due to it being aggressive in the first half, then totally no longer caring about you.

Ghosts shouldn't be able to hunt before the timer is up, unless a cursed possession was used, as far as I know. Your sanity won't drop below 50 in this 5 or 2 minute time limit.

Hey! Thank you for all of this info! We did say goobye every time we used it. It never broke and we never had a cursed hunt. I just didn't know if that would open the doors for ghosts, that normally follow the courtesy timer countdown, to hunt before the timer is up.
