I saw an other game called Lethal Company got 8 player support through a mod.
Reason this matters is that that bugginess and potential corrupt savegame you saw related to Phasmophobia can potentially affect EVERYONE due to everyone being on the same server. Case in point, Those modders back then crashed the whole server several times and corrupted a lot of save data from other players. Which is a huge part of why the devs have a hard "No Mods" stance now.
Not enough equipment.

Maps not big enough for more than 4 players.
This idea pops up almost every week or so.
Devs said no.
Devs said no to mod support.
if people really wanted to play this game with less people, they would.
