How does retrieving a dead player's items work?
I was under the impression that if a player dies, their items will disappear unless you pick them up and return them to the van. My friend died while holding a motion sensor and I returned it to the van, but we ended up losing it once the game ended. Am I wrong or did it just bug out?

You're wrong. There's no way of 'saving' a dead person's items. Based on difficulty you automatically get partial return of any submitted items in the form of cash. On Amateur the user who submitted an item and dies get 50% of item value for it; They get the same 50% for all items submitted by them. Intermediate is the same but 25% value. Professional and Nightmare have 0% return.

The insurance is automatic; There's lots of popular rumors around this, but it really is automatic. You don't need to retrieve their items, you don't need a picture of their body or anything; Just be on a difficulty that offers insurance payouts (Amateur or Intermediate) and die, and you'll get it at the end of the round automatically.
