I know some stuff like spirit box works only If you are speaking in a dark room. If its an alone ghost you need to be alone in the room to get a response.
I think that also the blowing out of candles has a higher chance to happen If the lights are off
Anyway, aside from that darkness doesn't seem to effect anything. After getting spirit box and checking for orbs(which doesn't require darkness but are easier to see in the dark) I usually leave the light on the ghost room on.
I actually like to the keep all the lights on, because when the ghost does an event it turns off the lights. So some times the ghost might appear in a different room and you can check quickly which room it might be in by seeing what lights are off.
