Additionally they recently added eye adaptation allows you to see a bit better in the dark after a while (unless you've switched it off, at which point you're stuck at 50 % eye adaptation) and after looking into some light, any unlit area gets darker for that reason.
And the brightness meter definitely works, it's just that something that isn't bright isn't affected that much, like you won't have a black area suddenly shine from itself.
Most people should still be capable of seeing in the dark though and if you've problems, it might be a good idea to not look directly into the lit areas of the map, since that will make the dark even darker (or even better switching off the generator to always have the eye adaptation at max value). Alternatively you could also restart the challenge until you get either sunrise or fog, which both have a way better visibility for outside maps in particular.
