That being said, I have seen shades completely break their hunting rules but not their interaction rules. I've had shades start hunts in the same room as me multiple times, single player and multiplayer (for example starting a hunt in the middle of cell block A in prison while 3 people are standing around the tables).
it doesn't matter where you stand in relation to the book, it solely depends on if you're in the same room as the ghost and if not, then it can fully utilize their interaction capabilities. If you played on higher difficulties, then i would even expect a room change eventually catching you off guard. Though without a detailed explanation or even a video it's hard to tell if it's a bug or just unlucky RNG, but it sounds more like the latter.
Also an onryo is best tested either above 50 % to lower the chance of unlucky RNG or if it's below 50 %, try to keep candles on, Onryos usually take some time between a blow out and the hunt, so if it starts like 0,5 seconds after the blow out, without you being able to light it beforehand, that might not be as good of a test you're hoping for.
So i don't really see, where the game trolls you, but you just taking tests for granted without trying to understand, how these tests are performed properly or why it's done that way.
