It was 1st made for regular gaming and later they added vr support.
You don't need vr to play it

First plans were actually to make it VR only, but they included a normal version as well before the EA release

maya is correct. originally was meant as vr only but they knew they would make more money if they added flatscreen as well

Correct. If I remember correctly, when the game first released into early access, wasn't there even a notification when you went to the store page, that the game was originally designed in VR, but would work outside of VR? I could have sworn it had that message originally.

I've played both - IMHO neither VR nor keyboard/mouse is superior to the other. Both have unique advantages.

Even if it started as a VR only game, right now the VR part feels very outdated compared to other VR games. Ironic because is still in early access.
