This info was confirmed by CJ & hasnt been touched since. On easier difficulties where the ghost has a low chance to leave its room, Cold Breath can easily tell you its room, in Higher difficulties where the ghost actually swaps rooms & roams, you can have half a floor of rooms being cold.
it just means the ghost is either in the room with you or that the breakers haven't heated the room up yet, you can walk around the entire prison or high school with cold breath in every single room before the breaker gets flipped.
and to clarify earlier, just like in real life: it only shows cold breath if there is a big difference between your body temp and the room your in, it doesn't signify freezing temps whatsoever.
There are multiple weather types with different ambient temperatures. In most cases, seeing breath is a good indicator you found the ghost room, as there are currently 2 ways to see breath: Either it's snowy weather, which makes the entire map's ambient temperature 5°C or the ghost made that room cold by being there. You can see cold breath when the room you are in is 5°C or lower. There is no correlation between your ability to find the favourite room by Thermometer alone and the breaker's status. It's just a wide-spread misconception. All you have to do is to find the room which is colder than the ambient weather temperature. In *most* cases, it's enough. Even on Snowy weather you don't necessarily need to turn on breaker to find the room. We know the whole map is 5°C, so we just need to find a room that is colder. The most important aspect of the breaker is giving you the ability to keep your sanity high by turning on lights. Also to test for Jinns and making the house warmer to counter Hantus. Finding the ghost room by Thermometer is perfectly possible even with a broken fuse box.
Light Rain, Heavy Rain and Windy are 8°C, which is only 3°C higher than 5°C, making it possible for a very roamy ghost to cause cold breath in rooms that are not actually its favourite room. Keep in mind that the speed of warming up is much slower than the speed on cooling down, so it's possible you can see breath in a room the ghost left a while ago.
Other weather types(Sunrise, Clear, Fog, Blood Moon) have much higher ambient temperature (16°C and 13°C), so seeing breath is only possible in the ghost's favourite room. You can argue it can still happen with an extremely roamy ghost, but thankfully this never happened to me yet.
As for the original post, there's really no reason the remove cold breath. If anything, it's in the game for immersion. I still think it's a useful feature, even if it's no longer means Freezing Temps.
The changes to temps were primarily to force players to use the thermo. Hell, they even nerfed the temp drop rate once it reaches the ambient temperature of the weather, so warmer weather generally has to take even longer to reach freezing temps.
Temps being used to quickly find the ghost room is fine. If anything, the complaint should be how utterly boring and passive the evidence itself is.
Honestly no idea, if it doesn't, I fully agree that it should be added as an option. I know for sure you can change certain things about the ghosts like how often they hunt and how fast they are.
Edit, Just checked, not an option, but you can change how often the ghost changes rooms. I know that's not the same as what you were asking, but it would largely negate the cold breath mechanic.
- sunrise: 383 seconds
- clear/fog/blood moon: 333 seconds
- light rain, heavy rain, windy: 250 seconds
- snow: 200 seconds
- Time to get from 5°C to 0,9°C: 133 seconds (add that to the above time and that's the earliest you can verify freezing)
And that's only if the ghost stays in a single room, but realistically at high roaming settings, it's probably 50 % higher and with room changes being allowed it might take even more time depending on how often it changes. So for small houses, you're most likely gonna find the ghost through other means first before seeing the breath, unless you take so long, that having the breath is probably a good addition to help you out.
