Spirit box never works

I don't think the spirit box has worked in a single one of my games, is this a bug or just a rare occurence for it to actually happen?

In the room the ghost is in mostly (found using thermometer), but I also just walk around the house.

And you might just be unlucky with the ghosts you get because obviously not every ghost uses the spirit box

Try to ask it simpler questions such as: How old are you? where are you? Give me a sign.
Also make sure that the ghost room light is off and be alone in the room, most ghosts don't respond with multiple people around.
If you've done all that and it still doesn't respond try to anger it either by swearing or by using its name to get a reaction as some ghosts can be extremely stubborn. Hope this helps

First thing: Check the whiteboard for how the ghost responds. It will either be everyone or only to people alone. If it only responds to those who are alone, only one person can be present when using the spirit box in order to get a response.

Secondly: as raptor mentioned, make sure the room you are using the ghost box in has the lights turned off. (Flashlights don't seem to matter though.)

Lastly: as of a recent update, only asking questions will work with the spirit box (ie no more "show yourself" etc.)

You can test your microphone in the audio options. It'll ask you to speak a sentence and confirms when the game heard you. I came to the conclusion that you have to talk really loud and clear in order to have the game understand what you are saying. When I talk in my normal voice, it often does just not recognize my sentence.

I have also heard that if you use the ghost's name and ask a question right after it only registers as angering it I think.

I honesty just drop the spirit box on the ground and ask a bunch of question in rapid succession. "Where are you, do you want us to stay, do you want us to leave, how old are you, where are you, die die die die die" . Then i leave if no response pick up more stuff and do it again, if no response, likely not spirit box.

it also says in the description of the item that it works best when there's no light around you, so turn off the lights and make sure no one is with their flashlights on

They usually answer fairly quickly, if they are going to. However once we find the ghost room I typically drop it in the room even if I don't think they will reply. Some times they do answer later on, and will respond to people just talking in the room.

Me and my teammate get answers from Spirit box like in 3 out of 4 cases. It is important to read the white board in the truck. Sometimes the ghost answers to everyone, so you can just wander around and try to talk (we do usually use these phrases" "How old are you?" "Whats your name?" "Where are you" "Who killed you?" + ghost name). Sometimes the ghost respons only one person. Usually that person has to be in the ghost room alone in the dark, so I always wear my brown pants. And in options, do the voice test, if your mic is really working. Then make sure, you are pressing button for proximity voice chat when talking to the ghost, if you have it set on toggle.

To touch on last comment, when we use spirit box and it works, we always use the global talk with it. I remember reading that currently it's a bug for you to turn it on and just talk to it but the intention of the developer and the next update should fix that you have to use the walkie talkie or "b" (i use controller so i think it's b but im not sure) while its on to have it detect you. You should see "nothing detected" if it worked and the ghost doesnt feel like talking or doesn't need the spirit box. Otherwise you'll hear something. Eventually.
