I have a few questions about the spirit box
For starters, I was wondering if the ghost only responds to the spirit box when in-game chat is working, as in do I actually have to locally speak in-game for the ghost to respond?

Secondly, are there only specific questions that the ghost answers to, and if so, what questions might those be? How helpful is asking questions? Is it worth asking questions, or it only really worth it to figure out that the ghost can respond to the spirit box?

Lastly, does the ghost have to be in near proximity to the spirit box when talking to it in order to actually get answers or can the ghost respond regardless of distance from the spirit box?

1. Yes, you have to speak using your mic. (V button for push to talk). The game has voice recognition so the ghost will hear you. So be careful what you say in the game voice chat. You will be surprised how good the voice recognition works.
2. Sometimes the ghost will say random words, sometimes he will directly respond to you questions. I find it worth to ask questions as I am interested in finding more about the ghost than just figuring the type.I wanna find out why its there, when did it die, how it died, does it haunt cause it likes the place or is it trapped here, etc. I ask it all kinds of random stuff...mostly get no response or just a random one, but every now and then, I get a unique response which makes me get the chills. (once I asked the ghost about its age, and it answered ''10'')
3. Its hard to say, kinda yes and kinda no.

Using local chat to speak to the ghost is the way to go. Also the three common phrases used when asking spirit box questions are "where are you", "how old are you" and "do you want to hurt us". And for it to work you have to be in the ghosts room/area for it to work (that's if spirit box is evidence to begin with).

Thanks for the help, the thing is that I seem to be having issues getting my local/global talk to actually say words when I speak into my mic, I can get the speech recognition to work just fine it says that it hears me but then when I go in the game I can't actually say words to anyone (by anyone I mean my one friend I played 4 rounds with). So no one can hear me when I talk, the same goes for my friend I just mentioned we couldn't figure out the issue, I am sure we will find a solution eventually but for now, we can't really use the spirit box, which sucks honestly.

Thank you for helping me, although, if you saw my post responding to the other person you'll probably see why I am having issues with it.
I have a separate question for the Spirit Box. This is a frequent argument with the group of people I play this game with as well.

If you ask a ghost to turn on the lights while using the Spirit Box and it does, does that count as a response for the Spirit Box?

1) I've tried both with/without using in-game mic, both works. I believe your mic is open to ghosts.

2) Yes, the three general questions you should ask during scanning phase are:-

1. Are you here?
2. How old are you?
3. Do you want to hurt me/us?

Then I'd move on to other tools to get other evidence, sometimes they won't respond until late game.

Here's a link for a list of questions/phrases you can use https://gamesgds.com/phasmophobia-all-questions-and-answers-ghosts-ouija-spirit-box/

Then here's a quick reference sheet for questions that can help you narrow down on the ghost type once you think you've gathered enough supporting evidence https://i.redd.it/opckpmeq1vp51.jpg (I usually only use these questions to trigger an aggressive response when evidence is hard to find)

3) The spirit box usually works best when it's inside the ghost's favorite room. Although I've seen youtubers getting responses from quite a distance away. Game is really buggy atm.
You can also just put the spirit box on the floor while asking questions.

Ehm no. The ghost must speak with you.

Wrong, I use push to talk and the spirit box hears my requests even if I don't open my mic.
