Depending on where you were and where the ghost was, there's a small chance it saw you before you broke line of sight, and that would cause the ghost to path directly to the last point it saw you, and then it picked you back up.
As far as your question goes, it seems unlikely that the consumed smudge would be the culprit here. In general, the ghost only senses the equipment you are holding and the flashlight (if on) and headgear (if on), so if you were holding a new smudge, it shouldn't have cared about anything else anyway.
I'd like a little more information about the timing of events. Did you smudge before or after your friend died? There's some small chance the ghost saw where you went after the smudge wore off, walked into your friend, and then kept going to the last place it saw you. Where did your friend die? This is mostly important to help locate where the ghost was relative to you right before it started pathing to you. Was there line of sight from that point to the kitchen (were the kitchen doors open?). Were you pressed up against the kitchen island, or a bit back? If you were back a bit, or moving around, sometimes the ghost can see the top of your model.
Thinking about it, the ghost room was the workroom in off the back of the kitchen (where the power can be) so I suppose it could have not actually known I was there and was just heading back to its favourite room when it saw me behind the counter (where it would technically be able to see me from the door to its favourite room...?
Would it typically head back to its room before actually finishing the hunt? I must admit I aren't particularly experienced around the mechanics of hunts (yet!).
The kitchen counter is a dynamic hiding spot. You need to be ready to move at any time to keep the counter between you and the ghost depending on where the ghost chooses to wander to.
Basically, bad luck, it happens, be ready for it.
sounds like a confused deogen.
