Said overhaul finally happened as of last August, which is known as the Ascension Update - with about six months of advance warning that it was going to be doing a full reset due to them being unable to translate the old experience system to the new one. The same update also brought in the tier system for equipment (get off those level 1 items asap, they are not that great (save for the thermometer but that is changing soon)... but then again they were meant to be used before you'd unlock professional)
As a compromise, they implemented a prestige system (which you can either do at level 100 or choose to ignore and keep going all the way to level 999), and fast tracked all those who played prior to their first prestige level (so if you don't have all the maps unlocked it seems your save data got borked and you'll need them to fix it)
The system is actually due to go through some minor adjustments soon, which includes a passive perk to committing to a prestige level; either some starting cash or a minor experience boost that will last until you prestige again.
