How did ghost know where I was hiding?
Hi! I'm a fairly new player trying to learn what I did wrong. I've tried to figure out through Google, but there's conflicting information out there, not to mention the game has changed over time. Anyone care to help me solve the puzzle?

Parameters:
  • Amateur difficulty
  • 42 Edgefield Road
  • Phantom, room in 1st floor bathroom
  • Ghost had not hunted yet, though had triggered a crucifix just before (~15 seconds)
  • I was only player left in the house, 2 more were outside
  • I was holding voodoo doll in hand, with unlit t1 flashlight and t1 polaroid camera on me

Events:
  1. I used the voodoo doll upstairs in the large blue bedroom
  2. I knew it had a chance to trigger a cursed hunt, so I already had flashlight off and was prepared to run to a closet in the hall to hide
  3. Pin went in heart and I ran and hid in said closet
  4. From timing and footsteps, it sounded like ghost came straight to my closet, opened it, and got me
  5. I had voodoo doll in hand the whole time.

I thought I was fairly safe hiding upstairs in a closet, so I was surprised when I seemed to be a beacon for the ghost! Seems unlikely to be coincidence.

Any thoughts? Cheers!

Were you by chance wearing a head camera and was that head camera On at the time so that your two friends outside could see what was going on? Head gear counts as electronics just like the flashlight and will attract the ghost to you if it comes in range to detect it.

No, we don't even have access to head gear! But I appreciate the query.
One other thing I forgot to mention is I was hiding in the same closet when the crucifix activated. I considered if the ghost remembered my location even though a hunt didn't occur. Though I am almost certain my flashlight was off at that moment as well, so still not sure what would have marked me.

One of the ghosts, Deogen, will always know where you are. There is no hiding from it. You must run from it, kite it around an object, like a car in the garage, or a table.

Could be:

1. White noise or background noise going through mic. Even if you not actively talking it could be picking something up.

2. Deogen. Ghost will always know where you are but will be super slow once it gets near you giving you time to run.

3. Someone had something on electronically. Headgear is the usual suspect of devices left on.

Things to keep in mind is that the ghost will hunt from where it is In That Moment. Ghost room means that's the room the ghost has the highest chance of being in, but if it was roaming or if it had recently activated an event nearby you, it could have been close enough to see you move into the closet.

It's also possibly that your mic was louder than you thought. My exbf got so frustrated months ago because the ghost kept zeroing in on him each time I'd pop smoke and get it off my tail. The problem: no matter how quiet he was, his mic was constantly registering in the peak and making him practically glow to ghosts. Check your mic and make sure your noise floor is where it should be.

It's also possible you just got unlucky. Ghosts will tend to roam around in a hunt, and try to roam around places they knew players already were. But sometimes, you just get unlucky and they just wander right into your hiding spot by absolute chance. They will also randomly throw open any closet and closet-like hiding spots they pass by, so keep your hand ready to slam it back closed the moment it starts to move.

Hmm it seems even more mysterious now! I thought there would be something obvious I just wasn't aware of.
Ghost was a Phantom, not a Deogen. I have Push to Talk enabled, but does the ghost pick up voice even if I'm not pushing? I was not pushing PTT and quiet, but maybe breathing or ambient noise.

Yeah or maybe just bad luck!

i don't play this game right now, i mostly watch it. a phantom has the ability to roam to a random player. since you were the last one in the house it might have roamed to your hiding spot. i'm not sure if this roaming event is allowed to happen during a hunt.

Hard to tell without seeing it, but given people have mentioned the mic thing a few times, I would also recommend setting your mic to push-to-talk activation instead of voice activation. If you DO have the problem that GuineaPrince mentioned, or something similar, that will be negated if your mic is only active at the press of a button.

Phantom roaming is a non-hunt ability, but it CAN start a hunt immediately after the roam is used (similar to how a Wraith can teleport and then hunt from right next to you).

Was there an event near your hiding spot recently?

I do not know if it is confirmed or not, but in my experience the ghost seems to remember where it last saw you. So if it saw you there for an event, then hunted from the ghost room, if it couldn't detect anyone it would go to where it last saw you.

I can not confirm if this is an actual thing or not, as I am new myself and don't know. But when doing zero sanity games it verymuch felt like the case. If the ghost saw me at a hiding spot for any reason, event or during a previous hunt, it seemed to always check that spot on the next hunt.

Last I checked, the ghost's ability to remember your LKP only applies to hunts.

As far as hiding spots go, the ghost is capable of roaming into furniture hiding spots by complete chance. This shouldn't be the case for lockers/closets though.

Number one rule of hiding—minus the electronics thing—is to always hold the door. When you go into the closet, pull the door shut as usual, but do not release it. The ghost can (and usually will) open random doors it passes by as it hunts. If you’re holding the door and it tries to open it, you can usually fight the ghost. Based on videos I’ve been seeing, all you have to do is just hold it and that’ll stop the ghost from being able to open it.

Thanks for clarifying. ^.^

The instance I was referring to, in specific, was when I (and friends) were playing a zero sanity game on the restricted sunny meadows. Ghost room was hospital room 3, and because it was a zero sanity game I was verymuch in the rhythm of poking out for 20 seconds to do things and gather evidence, then ducking into a hiding spot before the hunt inevitably started at 25. Was working fine. A friend died in the attempt and was hanging around the ghost room to be the hunt alert system. So twenty seconds were up, I ducked into hospital room 1 (I think?) to hide in that corner behind the bed. Had been a pretty safe spot for several hunts so far. But at 25 seconds it didn't hunt, it did an event and appeared in front of me. I, not knowing it could hunt from the event location, stayed where I was.

Event ended. Another ten seconds passed and I was wondering why it wasn't hunting, but I didn't move. Figured the instant I left the room it was going to hunt and I'd be dead, so I just stayed put. It eventually hunted, starting in it's room (hospital room 3). And as my ghosty friend said it just bee-lined it straight to me. Taking the shortest path possible to where I was hidden. (And I didn't have any electronics in my inventory/hands or in the room. I was only carrying a glowstick for light, which I switched off when the hunt started.)

So I just assumed it remembered where I was from the event. If that's not a thing then maybe it was just horrible luck xD

I've had an instance a few days ago where I was behind a set of coloured boxes (proper hiding spot), with no mic on (I have push to talk), and no lights or other electronic equipment on. I was joking that the ghost would never find me in that hiding spot because it was so remote and on the other side of the house to the ghost room. The ghost happened to roam right into it next hunt and got me. I could hear it roaming around nearby, and it didn't seem to know where I was, then I watched the ghost roam right into my little closet to an angle where it could see me behind the boxes. Then it turned around killed me. Sometimes you just get incredibly unlucky.
I could have survived if I had brought incense, but I was so confident the ghost would never get me there that I didn't take any.
