That said, if you put a camera on a tripod in the ghost room and go out to the van while someone else is inside, you will still see the DOTS there. But if you're holding it, yeah, make sure you're outside the favorite room.
Freezing doesn't feel like something you can actively encourage (outside turning off the breaker), which does feel annoying. You just have to keep checking. You could set up motion detectors to get an idea of how much time the ghost is in the room you're checking. If you sense it's a super roaming ghost you're just in for a bad time.
Only things I can think of to ensure it stays in the same place, increasing it's affect on the temperature of the room and your chance of getting freezing temperatures, is using;
Monkey Paw: "I wish the ghost was trapped" - locks the ghost in the ghost room for 60 seconds then starts a cursed hunt. You'd have to check pretty quickly after it started hunting as it will leave the room. Risky.
Burning incense. This only works if it's a Yurei as burning near a Yurei forces it back to it's room for 60 seconds.
Tier 3 salt at the door. Ghosts stepping on tier 3 salt will force it back to the ghost room. If you can ensure it's in the ghost room by any means, then place the salt, it won't be able to leave until it's attempted to roam a bunch of times and stepped through all the salt.
That should theoretically increase your impact on the temperatures in the room as you're keeping the ghost there. But Monkey Paw/Incense is situational depending on if you get Monkey Paw/Yurei, and Tier 3 Salt is obviously a later unlock.
Be interested if people have other ideas as I don't know of anything but "keep checking". my hints are semi-outlandish and only theoretical. Not something I've tested.
That will likely get a change later on, but for now, T1 is the best for temps.
That said, VulgarMonkey's tips are all solid, I would only add keeping both thermometers inside; one in the current ghost room, and one in an adjacent room. Periodically, pick each one up, check it, go into another room, then back in to make sure temps are fluctuating. Check them often to make sure the ghost is where you think it is, because roamers are ALWAYS annoying.
Beyond that, it's worth looking into some of the tells for each ghost too...a lot of times, I will leave things for evidence, then go casually look for the bone while they sit for a minute. I can get the bone and cursed object photos, then come back and check my thermometer, book, and so on. It gives my sanity a couple minutes to drain, because hunts are usually where I figure out the ghost anyway. This is, naturally, a difficult thing for newer players, but learning these things is what happens as you get more experienced anyway, all part of the learning curve. You'll get there...and we can answer questions until then!
