Also keep in mind that VR is currently not the priority for the devs. Like popular streamer Insym said: VR gets the short end of the stick.
It's still fun though and for a low price it offers A LOT.
The biggest upside (gameplay-wise) for me is you can carry two items on your belt and one item in each hand. If you don't need to open doors or flip a bunch of lights (or don't mind setting down an item occasionally), you can carry in 4 items instead of 3.
If you have Valve Index, consider downloading a custom controller binding because the default grip controls are prone to dropping items. After installing a simple custom binding to fix the grip issues the gripping works like a dream. (This is easy to do, you can do this in-game by going to the VR menu controller settings.)
Carry more items and sometimes glitch through walls or doors if you know how to move. Better to play with people if you want to carry four items. Since you can't interact with doors/light switches without dropping something. You can place items in different ways that Desktop users can. Kind of a double edge sword though.
Some disadvantages is you'll probably die more often during hunts. Trying to use matches and smudge stick is pretty much impossible. Even with a lighter and smudge it can be annoying. Since you have to light the smudge manually by turning on the lighter and pressing it up the smudge. I am all for immersion, but it is entirely unfair in comparison to desktop. You can't just press the use button to light the smudge like desktop does. A lot of the items that have toggles or placement options are completely gone in VR. You have to manually place things like video camera's. Enjoy bending your wrists in awful ways. You also can't toggle things like D.O.T.S. or T2 Motion Sensors on or off, or their other modes. If you have Toggle hold on, it will break a lot and just stop working. Using the journal or radio is also a pain at times... you'll reach up to grab them and it will grab the wrong thing or grab the headcam/headlamp off your head instead.
The negatives are far higher to me than the positives. If you really want to play in VR, I'd suggest at least having a desktop player with you.
It's still quite fun despite the downsides and the performance is perfectly fine for me.
Thanks for all the answers!
Now that I got all T2 equipment I'm getting back into VR again.
Yes, the game's VR support is not the best. But it has gotten considerably better than it was, and the posts above going on about it being super buggy are overstating the case. Some of it is harder than desktop because that's the way it would really be in RL, and you're actually working with your hands rather than just pushing a button.
I much prefer VR for this game. Would be nice if the devs gave it higher priority because it is the most immersive, realistic, and scary way to enjoy this game by no small margin.
But those five actions to light a smudge stick are smooth? Or are you saying impossible because game's actions feeling is clunky to perfom already? (and not, impossible because too many action in a tense/fast moment in VR can be complicated).
Sure, VR is more intuitive and authentic, but it proves much harder to perform quickly if you’re cornered and need to smudge quickly.
A lot of the training stuff doesn't work in VR.
Normal games pretty much 95% work.
There's a decent sized update in two more days. Maybe that will get fixed. Who knows.
