One is the Air Ball. You might notice a round cloud following your character, which will scream HAHHHH in your ear when it gets close to you.
The other is the chase event, where the ghost will show itself and chase you around as your heart races as if it's a hunt. Except when it catches you it screams HAHHHHH in your ear.
Both these events scream HAHHHHH in your ear, but you have to actually be facing the right direction to notice them. I spent my first few months of the game never ever seeing the air ball because by chance I was never looking the right way.
So the trick is: was the HAHHH an air ball or a chase? The easiest way to know for sure is to actually see the air ball or the chase. If you didn't see either, it's hard to say which exactly you experienced.
Though while the ghost is manifested, you'll hear the ghost walking around and causing electronics and lights to flicker, while the mist ball doesn't do that.
It's what makes it tricky to rule out oni until you have visual confirmation for "That was actually an air ball".
I always play with a headset, so i never miss the audio cues for that. Steps in particular are very loud. And i also always keep the EMF on and throw it into the ghost room, which gives additional audio cues for T2 and T3 EMF. I've yet not really had any situation in 200 hours, where i've missed that specific event, unless the mist ball moved away from me
That's specifically what the audio cue is for though. I don't need to see the ghost to know, that steps behind me, followed by a hah and the stepping sounds stopping, must be caused by a manifested ghost, since a mist ball can't do that.
