In an expert game, I started hunting with a music box, then hid in the basement, saw the ghost itself, my teammates and I shared the Smudge Sticks three times, and one died in the end.

Crucifix do not stop cursed hunts under any circumstances. They will only stop normal hunts.

It looks like this got edited from crucifix to smudge at some point...I'm not sure what you mean by "shared smudge sticks" though. If they're being used properly, one person will burn a smudge stick in their hand during a hunt when the ghost is nearly on them. This will blind the ghost for 6 seconds (12 if it's a Moroi) and it will wander aimlessly. Once it regains its sight, it will also regain the ability to locate and kill anyone it finds. If you're not burning the smudge, or if someone is getting found after smudging wears off, then the mechanics are working as intended.
