ID ghost with zero evidence?
Most ghosts make the lights flicker, make noise, move things around, and talk to you, so how am I supposed to figure out what I'm hunting if I can't use any evidence? If I'm looking for the spawn point with my temp probe and it goes below zero, does that nullify the challenge?

no evidence is intended for those who can identify the ghosts from their ability, speed and behaviors. If you can't, then this challenge isn't for you.

Exactly what Shadow says: this weeks challenge is not beginner friendly. It is very heavy on deductions and prior knowledge, and if you are not well seasoned you will find this mode impossible.

I would honestly advise passing on it this week if you feel this challenge is impossible at your current skill. I can do a bit of deductions, but not to this extreme... so I shall be doing the same.

Yeah absolutely, just wanted to check and see if "no evidence" was some kind of hint, but it looks like it's exactly what it says on the can so I'll try again next week!

On top theres really just a handful of ghosts you can even identify in any meaningful way with zero evidence (looking at you e.g. demon and mimic)

You can identify most ghosts pretty easy without evidence, though several require hunts for the best confirmation.

The toughest/most annoying ghosts to ID without evidence are Goryo, Yurei, Spirit, and Shade since you'll spend most of your time waiting around than anything.
Maya-Neko May 4, 2023 @ 5:43pm
Instead of just relying on the ghost simply telling you, what ghost it is, you now need to reverse engineer it by its behavior. That's mostly done by ruling ghosts out one by one. There are only a very few ghosts, which are more luck dependant, but usually most ghosts are obvious enough with some knowledge

And if you can't identify every single ghost (or some are just annoyingly slow to identify as well), then you can also just leave and try again, until you meet ghosts which are easier to identify, especially the ones with alternating ghost speed or very obvious abilities.

That's so cool! I was assuming the ghost randomly followed one of three or four gaits/voices/footstep sounds that's amazing there's enough variety in that (and more I'm sure) to identify just about every ghost!

This game has so much more depth than I was giving it credit for, I was figuring "clue but spooky" but there's so much detail it's actually blowing my mind

If you want the quickest ways to ID ghosts without (primary) evidence, I can give you the run down here (in spoilers of course):

Banshee- Banshees are more likely to do singing ghost events, and drain more sanity during such. They also have a unique scream on the paramic, though it's only a 33% chance and that's on top of the chance of it speaking at all. If you're with multiple people, it'll only target one specific person and ignore everyone else, even during hunts, as long as that person stays in the house.

Demon- Crucifixes work within 5m of the ghost instead of the normal 3m. It also has shorter hunt cooldowns so it can hunt more often, and it can hunt at any sanity level. High sanity hunts, crucifixes getting burned when the ghost isn't as close by, and very frequent hunts are all telltale signs.

Deogen- Deogens always know your position, but get slower to you the closer they are. You can easily powerwalk faster than them at point blank, so (easily) looping them during hunts is a dead giveaway.

Goryo- This ghost is a shut-in that almost never leaves its room, and will never change its ghost room. If you notice that it never really does anything outside of its room, safe bet on Goryo, though I'd still rule out as many other ghosts as possible first.

Hantu- Hantus turn off the breaker more often, and as slower in warmer rooms while faster on colder ones. You can loop Hantus in warmer rooms as a result.

Jinn- Jinn will never turn off the breaker, and will speed up if far away but in LoS, slowing down as they get close enough like a Deo; unlike a Deo though, they'll naturally speed up too so they'll eventually catch you. However, the latter doesn't occur when the breaker is off. They can also tank your sanity by 25% if they're close enough. basically, if you notice any of these signs, it's likely a Jinn.

Mare- Mares have a tendency to shatter the lights, will prefer to move into darker rooms (thus hunt earlier from there), and will sometimes turn a light off immediately after it's turned on. If you notice the ghost is shy with the lights on, it's likely a Mare.

Mimic- Mimics always have ghost orbs, even during no evidence runs. If you see orbs for whatever reason, it is 100% a Mimic. Alternatively, if you notice a ghost doing different ghost abilities over time, you're likely dealing with a Mimic.

Moroi- Moroi move faster if you're low sanity, and slow down when you are at a higher one. The best way to figure out a Moroi is to bring pills in when at low sanity and wait for a hunt. If the ghost is fast, eat the pills; if it slows down afterwards, its is a Moroi. Alternatively, if you smudge it during a hunt and it stays blind for more than 6 seconds, it is a Moroi.

Myling- Mylings speak more on the paramic, but this takes time. For a faster way, start a hunt and throw your flashlight on the floor while it's on. If the lights flicker before you hear footsteps, it's a Myling.

Obake- Obake has a small change to change its ghost model during a hunt. If you see this happen, it's an Obake.

Oni- Onis are more active in general, never perform airball ghost events, and will stay visible longer during hunts. If you notice this behavior for a while, it's most likely an Oni.

Onryo- Place a Candle and crucifix down in the same spot. If the candle keeps going out but the crucifix never burns, even at lower sanity, it's likely an Onryo. Alternatively, if the candle goes out and a hunt immediately starts, it's likely to be an Onryo, but you would need to test this multiple times.

Phantom- Taking a picture of the Phantom immediately makes it disappear. You can double check this in your journal by looking at the ghost photo. if you have a ghost picture but the ghost isn't there nor is the picture distorted, it is a Phantom.

Poltergeist- Polters can throw multiple items at once, so if you see or hear a bunch of items thrown at once, it's a Polter. Alternatively, leave a long line of items on the floor then have the ghost hunt you. If it throws just about every item in that line in quick succession, good chance it's a poltergeist; repeat tests will help confirm this.

Raiju- Hunts earlier if you have equipment left on all over the place. If it also speeds up when near electronics over multiple instances, it is a Raiju.

Revenant- If the ghost is hunting really slow when it can't see you, it's is a Revenant. Another, riskier way to tell, is if it immediately begins rushing at you the moment it makes line of sight.

Shade- If the ghost is doing almost nothing when you're near it, and isn't hunting until your team sanity is as low as 35% or less, it's likely a Shade. Unfortunately, it is easier to rule out most of the other ghosts before you can correctly ID a Shade.

Spirit- Smudge it when it is in hunting territory. Spirits need a minimum of 180 seconds (3 minutes) to hunt again when smudged. If a ghost doesn't hunt for that long at low sanity after multiple smudges, safe bet on Spirit.

Thaye- If the ghost is hyperactive early on, including more ghost events, fast movement, and high sanity hunts, but gets increasingly more shy over time, it's likely a Thaye. You will need to be near the ghost to confirm this though, so bring a candle for a bit.

Twins- If you hear or see interactions from a fair distance away from each other, it's likely the twins. you can also you the truck's activity monitor to guess them, as they often leave slopes instead of straight vertical lines when doing "twinteractions." Either method requires multiple tests to safely confirm.

Wraith- Wraiths leave no footprints at all. Leave a line of salt and a motion sensor where the ghost roams often. If it triggers the sensor but doesn't disturb the salt, it's a Wraith.

Yokai- Talking near a Yokai can trigger an early hunt as high as 80% team sanity. Ironically, it sucks at detecting your equipment or hearing your voice. if you're in a nearby room with no line of sight (ex: door's closed), talk near teh ghost to see if it follows your voice. If it doesn't find you after several attempts despite being somewhat close, it's likely a Yokai.

Yurei- The Yurei has the ability to shut doors in the room its currently in without using a ghost event. However, this ability is broken and it often sounds like the ghost is closing a door twice in rapid succession. If you manage to catch that, it's a Yurei. Despite that, rule out as many ghosts as possible before even bothering to confirm a Yurei, as it's honestly a very subtle ghost without primary evidence.

Keep in mind that this isn't every possible way to ID them, just the most common/efficient ways.

Not going to spoil myself yet, but will definitely keep this thread to the side for later! Thanks

I pass on every challenge. I just dont see the appeal when I get more money from custom difficulty and actually have fun while doing so instead of these weird challanges where half of the time you dont even get smudges (How is a lighter modern tech, or a smudge?)

My husband and I were doing the weekly challenge today and had a ghost start the hunt from both Foyer and Dining Room in the Grafton Farmhouse. We immediately ruled out Goryo, as it changed the room that it started the hunt from.
The crucifixes were located in the Dining room on the table, and by the bookcase in the Foyer
After that we checked for other ghosts, and settled on Yokai, as it didn't respond or change it's direction during the hunt when we talked to it through the radio and without the radio.
Turned out it was somehow Goryo.

We earlier had a ghost that didn't step in salt for 20 minutes, while never changing said room (Master Bedroom, room identified through both temp and the cursed mirror). After that we decided to doublecheck for Wraith, went upstairs with the EMF reader to wait for the teleport that does EMF 2, and as soon as we got the reading we thought that it was confirmed a Wraith, and left the building. Turns out it was a Jhinn, that used 0 abilities, per the game log.
And the game before that, we had a ghost that was in the nursery (again, identified by both the cursed mirror and lower temp) that never changed it's favourite room for 38 minutes, started 13 hunts out of the same room, which we thought was a Goryo. Turned out to be an Onryo somehow.

All ghosts had regular movement speed during the hunt, how were we supposed to get them right? :surprisedshady:

It honestly feels like after the first day of the challenge something bugged out and gives the wrong clues for the ghosts :crykit:

A couple quick additions on to a few ghosts:

Demon - Smudging a demon only prevents a hunt for 60 seconds instead of 90 seconds.

Jinn - As noted, it can't turn off the breaker, however it CAN turn on lights and accidentally trip the breaker. If you turn the breaker back on, and the lights come on with it, then you know it's not a Jinn. If no lights come back on, it means too many were lit up and Jinn could still be a potential option.

Mare - Can never turn on a light. If a light turns on and you didn't do it, cross out Mare.

Onryo - Note that the fires on the camp maps count as candles if blown out.

Thaye - If you get a Ouija board as your cursed object, you can ask it the ghost's age, then ask again later after being in the same room as the ghost for a long time. The number will be higher the second time you ask (make sure you have sanity before asking).

Twins - Each twin moves at a different speed; one is 10% faster than normal, the other is 10% slower. If your ghost hunts at different speeds each hunt, this is their tell.

I did the challenge (as a beginner) by checking for the easier ghosts and leaving if it's none of them;

Go in with a camcorder, The Mimic will always show Orbs on a No Evidence run, if you find out the rooms you see interaction, place salt around and if there's no footsteps while you notice interactions then it's a Wraith.

Check for curves on the activity monitor to see if it's twins

Maybe if you notice doors slamming, a scream on the microphone, instant hunt at full sanity by random chances then you could get instant answers there but I'd just restart the match (throw in a random guess while you're at it) and repeat otherwise

I'm slowly learning how to detect the other ghosts

Edit: I believe there's a cursed mirror in the first room on this challenge you can use to get the ghost room instantly, just don't forget to take pills after using it
