dots - the dots pen is so janky and unreliable in terms of the area it covers that it really just seems like a crap shoot. Sometimes the ghost will appear in it, other times it'll walk right through the field with no detection the entire session only for it to later be dots (not a goryo either)
most of the other level 1 equipment seem reasonably downgraded but these two do not feel that way at all despite using them correctly.
So, For spirit box, The effective range of the T1 is smaller than the old one; But it's still not too bad, imo. It's a 3m range... If you place a T1 crucifix or T1 writing book on the ground, you know that grey ring that pops up? That's the area the ghost has to be in for you to get an answer. Additionally, the ghost roams from it's room sometimes, as i'm sure you know.
So to make things easier, Stand in the doorway between what you think is the ghost room and the hallway outside; Every time the ghost roams, it WILL be in range of you for at least a few questions, both as it leaves, and as it comes back. Additionally, any time an object is thrown, a door touched, etc, move to the location the action happened (IE, for a throw you want to go where it was thrown from, not where it landed), ask a few questions, then move back to the doorway. Using motion sensors, do the same thing; every time it pings for the ghost, move closer to that motion sensor for a couple questions then back to the door.
It's all about maximizing time spent with the ghost in range of hearing your questions- The chances of getting an answer are a little lower too, but if you speak and register questions fast enough, you can get 2-4 questions every time the ghost is in range. Even if you're slow you'll get 1-2 typically.
For DOTS, I think one of the things stumping you is where to aim- And there's two pretty simple ways of correcting for that. First, A bit of info on how dots have changed from before- Instead of the DOTS generating a random entity running in a random direction with no regards to the ghost's actual whereabouts, the ghost now becomes 'Dots visible' occasionally, during which if DOTS is shown on it, it becomes visible.
Now, An incredibly important thing to note here is that while DOTS visible, the ghost will directly* approach the nearest** player in the house.
* The ghost will path around any obstacles/walls
** If it's a banshee specifically, it will always path towards their target if they're in the house.
As you know, the T1 DOTS is like a flashlight. What this means is, if you're tucked in a corner at the end of a narrow hallway and shining the flashlight out, when the ghost becomes DOTS visible, it walking right towards you will give you dots, since it has no way of being in the beam. This mentality works in non-narrow rooms too; Tuck yourself in a corner and shine dots back and forth slowly, or in the direction of the most recent activity. Or be on the outside of it's room pointing at the door to try and catch it when it's roaming- The light shines 15m forward.
Motion sensors make this even more of a no brainer, use the sensors to divide the area up into segments, tuck yourself into a corner and shine your DOTS at whichever segment the ghost should currently be in.
Additionally, if you didn't know, you can 'Place' the DOTS pen like a video camera, you can use this to create a cross-beam in larger booms, which significantly reduces the liklihood of the ghost not being somewhere in the dots when it becomes dots visible.
Hopefully the above can help you out... Personally T1 dots is my favorite item in the new update, It took a little bit to figure out, but since then a heck of a lot of fun.
T2 upgrades it to 50% interaction chance and 4m range and T3 upgrades it to 66% chance and 5m range.
