Can't exactly say adding some progression goals is the same as a battle pass, nothing alike.
Nor would I say the starter items would give a "bad impression" on new players, especially considering you're pretty much broke at the start anyway so if everything was unlocked it's not like you'd have the cash to buy them, especially should you die fairly often (like new players would or those that don't play it constantly) so you can't even replace the expensive items should you buy them.
And yeah, the flashlight in particular can definitely be improved a littlebit for those, who doesn't know every map by heart (though room lights are still a thing) and the video cam could be bigger, but what is the problem with the rest? Most of them still work identical or at least similar, just with a littlebit smaller radius or being slower in some areas (and i would even argue, that the thermometer and book got hugely buffed).
Many beginners already had big problems getting started in the old version, yet it is still the most played ghost hunting game. It seems like the good atmosphere and the socializing factor still kept players within the game and that will most likely not change.
Also no need to weaponize beginners. We experienced players all have entrenched habits and it's always strange to be forced into changing things. Just say, that you've problems yourself and don't make it sound like you're only complaining about it for the beginners.
And i feel like these items are part of the Horror 2.0 upgrade, as it is definitely scarier to have less light and older, less efficient equipment, which again is also something many people have asked for.
