The ghost can feel electricity on you.
Also don't speak, and avoid open-mic because it could hear a simple breathing noise.
Finally, make sure the ghost doesn't see you hiding after the smudge wears off (it only lasts a few seconds). If the ghost sees you before hiding, you're dead.
Also, if the ghost has seen you, you can't hide anymore, you would need to burn a smudge stick in this case scenario and only then you could hide.
But beyond that it mostly comes down to what you've exactely done. A video about it would definitely help, otherwise it's mostly about the tipps the others already mentioned.
Make sure you turn your electronics off, as the ghost Can and Will see it, and don't make any noise that the mic can pick up on.
My advice supposes that OP is a beginner at the game, and he still needs to learn the basics.
And if you smudged it, that should have broken line of sight via stunning it. Closing the door ASAP should have bought you all the time you needed to hide as best you can (desk seems to work for me, but I'm fairly certain it's not 100% safe)
So based on those two variables... it either homed in on any active electronics you had equipped (most common offender is usually the flashlight, as the items state is independent from the quick toggle for it), or your mic had projected some background noise and it heard you (to which I do recommend push to toggle - I know my own mic is pretty sensitive and that helps ensure that I'm not killed because of it)
-There are no specific rooms that are ever 100% safe, unless you are in what the game sets up as a hiding spot (and even then, you can die if the ghost sees you running into them). Before hunts occur, try to find empty closets, lockers, or large stacks of boxes that you can hide behind (careful, some maps have small box stacks that can mislead you). To be hidden in a locker or closet, the door(s) must be completely shut and latched.
-If a locker or closet has piles of stuff in it, it's not safe, so ignore it completely.
-Ghosts will occasionally open the door as they walk past lockers and such. You can hold a locker door shut from the inside, but a closet will have 2 doors, so you have to quickly re-close both doors before the ghost doubles back and sees you.
-Some maps, such as Tanglewood, have semi-safe spots where you can hide as long as you keep the ghost from seeing you. Great examples would be kitchen islands, or the van on Tanglewood, you can circle them if you move at the right times and the ghost will not see you. More dangerous, but a perfectly good way to survive.
-As mentioned, turning off electronics and being 100% silent BEFORE entering the hiding spot is the best way to be sure you're safe.
-Finally, if you have a lighter and smudge stick on you during a hunt and the ghost has line-of-sight on you, you can light the stick when the ghost is almost to you to blind it for 6 seconds (12 seconds if it's a Moroi), and can even walk through the ghost if it has you cornered. This will save you a lot, so it's good to practice; use the Challenge mode (or a custom mode set to make you lose no items on death) to test it and get used to the mechanic.
-One warning on that, smudging a Deogen can be dangerous since it speeds back up while blind, and might randomly run in a way that keeps it on top of you. Just be aware ;)
Not really.. I turn on electronics all the time when hiding.. an havent had an issue.. you cant leave them on, or pop them when they are like right next to you.. but turning something on / off will not mark you.. it has to be close.. ( this is all at nightmare diff)
The number one issue is OPEN mic.. most of the times.. If you are not using push to talk its gonna get you killed.. or have a MUTE toggle for when a hunt starts.. Even someone talking in another room will trigger the open mic, an get you killed =)
