I don't get why they are releasing an early access title to consoles
I just don't understand this news, how do they expect to do the whole early access things when now we will have to wait for the console patch the be ready as well.

i agree. it seems so odd that they would do this since the game is far from finished. and i love how they opened their statement too "we hear you loud and clear".... WHO asked for this, exactly? lol
people have been asking for the update and achievements for the longest time, but we get this instead.

This is a mistake.

This game is allready being made at a snails pace and I cannot understand this decission, I guess we are litterally going to have a 2077 release date....

Because it makes them money. It's that simple. Phasmophobia has become a very popular game, for better or worse as it changed the developer's approach quite drastically. They act less and less like a cool indie dev with a passion project and more and more like any other development studio with a popular intellectual property at hand.

I miss the old days when there was a public beta branch which would get updates every few days, where sometimes experimental changes would also land to either stay or be patched out again a week later.

I mean they literally are upgrading from snails pace to glacial, now they need to develop for pc AND console, yeah that isn't going to hamper development at all. :winter2019neutralyul:

Still don't have Australian servers and they release it on console, bit sad really. Judging by the insanely slow updates I feel the updates are going to get even slower especially due to the fact that updating games on console is a bit of a crappy process.

Life is just so hard for you guys. Having to wait is so much work...
Once the patches come out you will play nonstop and burn yourselves out in 2 days just to complain and question when the next patch comes out saying there is nothing to do.

So why bother even waiting lol Find something else to do already...

it really won't honestly - the console versions are going to start on the progression 2.0 update, and they will just work on the dev version and then attempt to push their updates simultaneously for both PC and Console.

At worst - the console versions will be the ones that get their updates delayed... and primarily due to any certification/verification processes they'd additionally need to jump through.

They cannot do that due to crossplay unless they are willing to have it randomly be disabled. Every game I've ever seen that added console crossplay was immediately constrained by the console patching process.

hmm true enough there I suppose. Like I said though, that was a worst case scenario... but I don't think it will affect development time all too much regardless. The release schedule after the progression update part one maybe... but not the development.

But hey, nothing wrong IMHO with giving them an extra week or two to ensure there's nothing game breaking slipping through. That said, I do still expect a few bugs to slip by because, lets be real, no update in any game these days is 100% perfect and bug free on day one.

Tend to buy a lot of "Game Previews" and whatnot for Xbox. It can be a smart move IMO. Also have gotten more than a tiny share of Early Access games as well here on Steam. Not speaking for the developers, nor the publishers, however, it's one way to get funding into a game. It's more importantly a way to get a game exposed to a wider audience. Might sound silly to some people, but I don't know a lot of gamers that game on PC. They're mostly on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4/5 and dominate the Nintendo Switch for whatever reason. Assuming Cross-Play comes with the console versions, this opens up the doors to me playing the game with far more than just my daughter.

The Xbox versions might end up causing support for streaming as well. To be clear, I mean Microsoft's Cloud Streaming of games. Haven't tested the game out on GeForce Now and so on yet. This for me is a huge plus, because my kid prefers to play games that way for whatever reason.

Just some thoughts for whatever they're worth. Enjoying the game, and can already tell they put a good deal of work into it. Granted, I've only been playing it for about a week so far.

Well it wouldnt normally b e a problem IF ya know, the game wasnt being made at a snails pace.

Most games are developed muchh faster.

Not really sure what a snails pace means? It's pretty common for a development cycle to last a decade or longer, though I don't have averages for smaller studios. Last game I tested for a AAA was never released. A sequel to a very well selling and profitable to the publisher title, which the original title was itself a sequel to two other very well selling titles. Developer went bankrupt. Sadly happens a lot, and it's normally due to funding issues. (I can't really get into the weeds of what happened to cause this.)

Thing that stands out in my mind at the moment is that my favorite recent game took over 30 years to make. Just how long it took for the engine to be developed. Probably need to cut what I wanted to say short. This is way too weedy of a topic. Too many questions that have to be answered first and I don't work for them.

Might be too new to what's going on with this game anyway, and know nothing about the developer of it. Will just trust you on this.

Snails pace just means extremely slow.

Development cycle (Normally) only lest for a decade or longer if a new engine is to be made. This is not the case here. Most small companies actually release a game within 4 years of early access release. We are currently in that fourth year, and the fact they're adding console to it means you have to optimise three different platforms. I dont see this as a positive. I see this as a negative and that will only add more delays to a game thats been delayed 3 times allready.

This game also has no funding issue. This game has sold plenty and unity is really cheap to work with for small teams.

Heck, There's cases where a former HL mod team for example, made a game engine, a game on top of that, all within the span of 5 years (This being natural selection 2) with own assets.

Phasmo still uses many assets from store.

Might look into getting better metrics later, but at a fast glance it looks to be around 40 to 50 months. 4 years would be about right. At least with Steam EA. Kinda need to be doing other things. Just up late today is all. The majority don't look to have ever left EA, though the metrics I'm looking at are very dated. From around the time the Green Light Program ended. Normalization problems to be clear.

"most games" aren't Phasmo. I'd rather them take their time and add delays, than release the game as completed with a ton of bugs and game breaking issues. Sure, they could do more hotfixes, but then you would still complain, saying they're updating too much. No matter what the devs do, people will complain and want the opposite of what was given, or complain that not everything suggested, was added.
