The smudge stick applies its effect multiple times throughout the smudge stick animation, not just twice, so no need to wait for the latest possible moment.
If you're playing multiplayer, but aren't the host, then smudging that late can still cause you to die due to latency. It can even happen in singleplayer, if you use the smudge stick at the same time the ghost reaches you.
I wonder if there's an issues with smudge time? It did allow me to run through without dying which makes me think that it did register the smudge
thats why I dont try to loop the ghost in multiplayer
I have had ghosts killing me from 5 meters away in multiplayer but I can loop ghosts standing 1 meter away in single player
if you wanna smudge it during a hunt in multiplayer , just do it from 3m minimum, else based on your ping you will die
Smudging does not make the ghost intangible; it just makes the ghost walk in a random direction for the duration of the smudge.
I had something similar occur back in 2020, but it was me testing my theory by smudging the ghost, have it turn around and walk into a wall, and me running directly into it while it was "confused" to see what would happen. (I died, as you might expect.)
Can say from experience that it does still work, so I'd say this was either a random glitch or a latency issue for the OP. I've made it a habit to run through the ghost pretty much any time I smudge to make sure it hits, and have done it pretty much every single hunt I've been in since the last patch (and last several before that). Have yet to ever die except for one case where I waited just a second too long (it was a phantom and I misjudged the distance while it was invisible), and it grabbed me at the exact moment I lit the smudge.
