There's a few elements of randomness - it can be one or two points below the actual reading. So an EMF reading of 3 can be 1-3, an EMF reading of 5 can be 3-5. But this doesn't mean that a spike of 5 is conclusive evidence.
Ghost events spike an entirely random amount, can be anywhere from a small blip to slamming the activity up to 10. Depends on the exact event and what other interactions take place.
And certain ghosts, like the Twins and Poltergeist (the latter doesn't have EMF 5) can interact with things quickly enough for a big spike to appear as one.
I'm not sure about the wiki, but it's -2 to 0 for most cases. Specifically, it's the EMF value minus 1, with the -1 to +1 variance calculated afterwards.
