Ghost running over Crucifix and kill me

Isn't the crucifix mean't to stop the ghost from killing me when I put a crucifix on the ground with F ?
I read a little bit but the anwerse are a bit unclear. Do you have to put it into the ghost room to be save instead of cutting of his way? So you are not save for three hunts when you wait near the crucifix?

No it stops them from hunting. If it did start the hunt far from the crucifix it wont stop a hunt. The smuge stick will delay them during the hunts.

Here's how the Crucifix works:

- When you place it down, you'll see the white overlay showing you its range. For the Demon, the actual range will be wider.

- When the ghost chooses to start a hunt, it will check to see if it is currently standing in range of a Crucifix, either on the ground or being currently held out by a player's hand.

- If it is, it will cancel the hunt entirely and burn one side of the Crucifix. If it isn't, it'll hunt as normal.

If the hunt has already started, the Crucifix won't do anything. It's too late. You want a smudge stick for that.

Nah, it still shows the normal range. On some maps, Demons can actually trigger the crucifix while it's still in the van.

Still this is also very helpful when you hold it in your hand, no? (didn't know that this works either)
Can the ghost spawn directly next to you otherwise or must he have some distance?

Crucifix can work in your hand, but I wouldn't rely on it.

It works when you're holding it in your hand, but not in your inventory.

If the ghost happens to be in range of you when they start to hunt, it'll not hunt. If it's out of range of the Crucifix, the Crucifix will do nothing and it'll hunt.

Crucifix can work in your hand, but I wouldn't rely on it.

This is the answer that's rather inconsistent I've been seeing! Some claim that it works in your hand while others claim that it doesn't work in your hand to where I can feel its literally 50/50 when it comes to this community.

I think people get confused because it only works if you're holding it out (meaning you basically can't do anything else while holding it) and if the ghost happens to be more than five meters away from you, it's wasted. No real reason to hold it instead of chucking it down into their room.
