How do closet hiding spots work?
I find that I keep dying in closets and other door based hiding spots. There must be some mechanic that I don't understand, as I rarely see this happen in YouTube playthroughs.

My process is that I always walk into a closet/locker hiding spot, click the door, and hold it closed as tightly as possible. I almost always still die if the ghost enters that room. I tried not holding the door shut to the same result. I know this isn't a line-of-sight problem because to test this I loaded into a test game and immediately sat in a closet until the ghost started to hunt on its own. I still die every time the ghost enters the room even though it would have never had the chance to see me.

Does anyone have any idea as to what I could do differently? It can be pretty frustrating to burn through so much money. I feel like I need to play ultra safe as my survival rate during hunts is very low.

Edit: I would also add that I do make sure to turn off my flashlight and any other equipment that I might have on me. In the test games I walked in with a flashlight (turned off), a smudge, and a lighter.

Sounds like your mic might be picking up it's own feedback/static or background noise in your room leading to your death. Try enabling Push-To-Talk

I know you disclaimed some of this but for the sake of completeness I'll list it all.

A ghost will idly open the doors to hiding spots when it passes by them. This you can prevent by quickly shutting them or holding them shut.
A ghost will do a full check by violently throwing open both doors (you can't stop this) and walking inside if it detects...
  • There are electronics on inside the hiding spot
  • You are holding electronics that are on in the hiding spot
  • You are making noise
  • Once a ghost has fully checked a hiding spot, it will randomly check it in the future too regardless.

Some minor things to note about the noise one. Outgoing radio counts as noise. Incoming radio (and the static from it) doesn't. In solo local chat is *always* on and will count.

Electronics only cause a ping, while a player holds it. Throwing something on the floor in a hiding spot won't attrackt the ghost. (obviously if the ghost already saw you holding it, then throwing it on the floor won't stop it from checking the spot anymore)

No it doesn't just check things randomly

The ghost only remembers the last spot in a hunt, where it spotted a player and will at the start of the next run roll a 50%-Chance for if it will check that spot again. Once this roll was decided, it won't check that spot again anymore in the future.

Obviously that means, when the last spot was within a hiding spot (for example someone died there or someone used a smudge stick within the hiding spot), then it might be better to avoid this spot for the next hunt.

But ultimately, hiding spots are 100% safe in any hunt, as long as you don't give them such a last ping within a hiding spot.

yeah mouth breathing with an open mic and no sound suppression will always get you killed first, and im glad

Along with what everyone said, there is a ghost type, The Deogen who always knows where you are no matter what, but it's very slow when it gets close and can easily be kited. SO be aware that you may be getting killed by that if you just sit in hiding.

Unless it's a bug, PTT works in solo now too. I know I'm usually watching youtube on the side during hunts if it's a normal hunting speed ghost and I'm not getting information on it.

Can confirm, tested on several occasions since a lot of people seem to think your mic is always on solo.

Thanks for the info on the second one. First one definitely *used* to be the case, but I guess the info is just old now.

I never heard of a method to just trap a ghost into a specific position, so if it was possible, then propably just due to a rare bug
