Horror 2.0?
Just saw the updated roadmap, what exactly does horror 2.0 even mean?

So pretty much anything, where they try to make the game more scary overall, while getting rid of Unity assets.

Hopefully some of them include more ways to scare the ♥♥♥♥ out of players, I recall even suggesting an animation of someone being dragged into the darkness of a basement with the door closing behind them, just picture how terrifying that would be if you were to see that especially if the person being dragged not only gets dragged past you but are also screaming their asses off.

I doubt there will be many/any force-movement/dragging animations, because of the VR aspect.

Having my character suddenly faceplant and get dragged along would make me nauseous, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Yeah but as it is currently, it's pretty underwhelming when you die in VR. I thought I'd get scared shtless when I got caught by the ghost in my first VR session, but it was more just like... "oh, 2 hands coming up on my screen, I got caught... is that it?"

They are changing the animations.
I'm just saying that people should not expect forced-movement animations (which many people seem to want) because of the VR aspect.

It's underwhelming, because you get used to it quite fast, since you know exactely, when it happens. That will definitely happen to any kind of death animation eventually.

So overall i just hope, that they put mor emphasis on the atmosphere than scaryness, because at some point you can just feel, that they're trying too hard to scare beginners, without realizing, that it gets annoying for experienced players (pretty much just like what Ghost Watchers tries to do with the dragging or very loud ambient sounds)

It was underwhelming even on my first death, getting 2 hands slowly creep up on your screen isn't exactly scary even for newcomers. I went into phasmo on VR as my first time experience because I didn't want to spoil myself by playing it on a 2d monitor first. Death was not nearly as scary as the rest of the game. The atmosphere and everything else was great, but dying is just... really uninteresting

Well yeah, the animation itself doesn't really reflect the standards of what is planned for the future. That's why it gets replaced in the first place.

I however was talking more about the scaryness of something like that. Scaryness mostly derives from not knowing, what happens, but since many players get killed eventually, that "unknown" will reveal itself quite fast, especially for beginners. And that ultimately leads to death animations being less scary by default and nothing can stop that from happening. The only thing, which is utilized by many horror games is to use scripted jump scares, which obviously frighten more out of pure suddennes rather than actual atmospherical scaryness and that's what can get annoying very fast, especially in a game which builds upon replayability.

so i really hope, that they just don't build in scripted jump scares. Other games already showed, that it doesn't really work for long time replayability anyway.

Death animations need to fun not scary.
The problem with "scary" is that after a couple times, you get used to it, and then it becomes "normal".

However, if the death animations are actually neat looking, or a fun experience, then you appreciate it even if it's happened several times.

As I recall though, I believe they said the death sequence will be associated with the ghost model itself. So while the model won't be tied to the behavior/ghost (so you can't guess by seeing it), how interactions, events and deaths will be thematically appropriate to the model.
At least, that's what I think I'd heard... I can't remember where/when that was though.

Im sure I read the same thing on Reddit a few days ago while reading CJs Profile Posts.

I hope the characters have a variety of terrifying death screams as they are killed. Imagine hearing another player die through the wall with some good sound design.

In general I hope that Horror 2.0 has an emphasis on sound.

I would say seeing a hand reach out from the darkness in VR would scare the ♥♥♥♥ out of you in VR.
