During a hunt you will hear the typical "slam-klack-klack" sound when the door is locked. During a ghost event, it will only slam. So you can actually hear the difference.

So they open doors whenever they feel like, where ever they feel like wondering. Most ghosts don't wonder too far beyond their rooms, so you won't see many doors open in areas further away from the spirit unless in one of the smaller houses. Otherwise, it's random about how many doors open, where the spirit will wonder to, and how far. I haven't managed to figure out a way to pin down how far each wonders from their room, i also play on prof only so they swap rooms from time to time on me too which is not helping.
Playing on prof would make that harder to tell :)
I thought the ghost stood still during a ghost event but recently it was walking around and closed the front door so I thought it was a hunt but it apparently wasn't in the stats at the end of the game.
Yes. the walking spook event is the most scariest and can be easily mistaken as a hunt when it starts from another room (as the room lights indicator is missing). Phantoms do them more often, and drain super much sanity as well doing it :)
Only if you are the target of the spook. Then it does "hiss" and dissappears (which does result in an extra sanity loss as well afaik). Other players may snuggle with the ghost and it does not vanish.
