How do you open the Ghost Writing book?

I pressed all buttons while holding the book but it remains closed

F to place. You have to be looking at a spot where you can put it down.

Hold F and place it on the ground while crouched

Press F to place the book down. If you're trying to throw it on the floor, you may need to crouch. There used to be a "ghost" outline of the equipment you were trying to place to show how it would be placed, but it looks like they took that out for some reason.
