2. The ghost itself is pretty plain, and there aren't many interactions to "scare your soul out of your body", so, walk lightly.
I got the game because a few of my friends talked me into getting it. I wasn't into it at first because I dislike the horror genre and hate getting scared. Playing the tutorial at first to get familiar with the game I was like "heck no" all the time, but after a few actual rounds with the others it turned out to be really fun. Now, over a year later I'm the only one of them who still actively engages with the game :v
VR solo is terrifying, but very rewarding.
Being alone makes it MUCH MUCH slower and more creepy.
Online play in both VR and standard is at least 80% less scary. Especially if you are on flat and someone else is in VR because the VR avatars do hilarious stuff and it really lightens the mood.
Personally, I prefer solo play. Online is good, but when I play a scary game, I WANT to get scared!
There are not "jump scares" per se`. Ghosts dont often appear directly behind you or suddenly jump out in your face. The jumpiest scare ive had has been a "ghost event" (the ghost just messing around with you) where it hisses in your ear. Nearly threw my controller the first time hahahaha
Ghosts generally give you a bit of notice when they are coming after you. The most terrifying part is when they start a "hunt". I would be fine with it if they didnt lock all the heckin exit doors.....
Solo vs co-op are two different kinds of scares, much like watching a scary movie would be if you were alone versus hanging with some friends equally into allowing themselves to be freaked out. And I do think this game benefits from allowing oneself to get scared.
I worked in film for a while (no, not porn; everyone asks) and I can watch a horror movie like someone eyeing the technical aspects (camera cheats, wondering what lighting set up they used, etc) or I could just immerse myself in the scares and let the movie do it's job. That's what this game is also like for me - I get the most out of it when I allow the game to scare the ♥♥♥♥ out of me.
I played solo... once. And it was daylight in my apartment. Nope. Not doing that again. When the EMF started bugging and the ghost was whispering at me from the hallway? Nope.
But this game was worth every penny thus far. My rule is always "it's worth it if I get an hour of great gaming per dollar that I spent". I can't see that not being the case here. So yes, the game CAN be scary if you allow it to be, yes you will be pissing yourself in the dark once the thing kills the power in the house you're in, and yes, you will violently defecate in your chair once some little kid's voice starts singing an ethereal "ring around the rosey".
So yes... play the game, cuz it IS scary. And scary is fun.
