But as for them not working? I had them work as expected in 6 different games tonight across 14 different hunts. The only thing I can really come up with is that either you were in a hacked lobby where the cheater made ghosts not be affected by Smudges, or the Smudge ran out before the ghost reached it.
Try to follow these steps:
The ghost is actively chasing you and in view
While in view light the smudge while looking at them
Hold your gaze on them with the smudge active
After a couple seconds it should be stunned for 5-6 seconds, this is your time to run away
This method has never failed on me
Smudge sticks prevent the ghost from spawning for 1 minute and 30 seconds if burned in the ghost room.
If you properly use it during a hunt you can stun the ghost for 5 seconds giving you that much more time to run away
If you want a more extensive understanding of smudge, you can watch Psycho on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcG1KDw3N2s). Much to the credit of his title, this dude has 300+ hours on this game and most of it has been documenting little things like this. Bless the man.
But my point is:
Psycho says (and this is also said in the Patchnotes): During the 5 seconds of stun the ghost shouldn't be able to kill you, even if you touch it.
But that just happened to me a few times.
The ghost killed me with burning smudges in my Hand!
Maybe I just need a little more practice...
Thanks for your answers!
Report it in the bugs section, since I imagine things break on beta all the time. That definitely shouldn't happen.
Not true. The banshee for instance will not kill anyone except its target unless the target is outside the house. You can jelk with your friends all night long in the hallways while the target hides and the banshee will never kill you even if it runs through you (what a sensation!)
No matter if you have 100 sanity. If her target is not in the building, be prepared^^
She will choose another one.
(btw: if you get a hunt within a minute after entering the building: It's a banshee^^)
I experienced it in many situations: a ghost stunned by smudge can not kill you in these 5 seconds. Even if you touch it. But sometimes, the burning sticks in your hand seem not to work.
I did a couple of tests tonight. It seems to be the best way to wait until the ghost see you. then use smudge and break LOS. Do not drop the sticks.
Just run.
This worked for me on every map. Tonight.
However, I'm glad you figured out what works for you. Give them hell!
Check out Psychos video guides for proof.
Many players do not know this.
Banshees do not walk around. The ghost you mean is the Phantom.
Phantom walks around toward the players and wait for LOS for 20 seconds.
(Wraith can walk around either, but I don't know his mechanics yet.)
Thank you, I will give them hell!
I guess you'll have to go test it with some smudge to really learn ;)
As for smudging ghosts, it's based on the smudgestick's fog from what I can see.
This means if you have a smudgestick that's active and you walk into a ghost, you can manage to connect with the ghost before the smudgestick's fog registeres and its smudged. (You die.)
Also, after smudging a ghost, the ghost is briefly unsmudgeable and 5 seconds is not a long time. If you smudge a ghost that's following you, the ghost can end up still walking in your direction. After a few moments, he becomes immune to the effect and you die.
It's possible that there's a bug with smudgesticks on the beta, but I did multiple smudgings today and didn't die a single time.
