iirc, candles last about 3 minutes before going out on their own. You'll just have to relight it and hope the ghost blows it out.

Hmm, alrighty good to know thanks. Had a hunt where the candle almost went out immediately after placing it but it didn't count, is there any kind of wind that can come from the front door?

From my understanding, it can be blown out by someone running by, by the wind, or by other logical in-game mechanics. You just have to relight it and wait. I could be incorrect though, this is my own observation. Can anyone confirm (or correct) my hypothesis?

No. It either goes out based off a timer, or when the ghost interacts with it. For the best chances of getting the ghost to blow it out, I recommend lighting it when near the ghost and just following it.
