My friends can hear but the ghost can't
For the past days I've been playing some phasmophobia all going well, no problems reported. Then suddenly after getting a new pc the game somehow can't recognize - or it can but still not, let me explain. So when I use the voice recognition when starting up the game for some reason can't hear me when I say the sentence "Come here" or whatever it is, can't remember. But I just thought it was a glitch so I started up the game with some friends who could hear me on discord and in the lobby and even when we joined the game. But when I tried to use the spirit box, the game didn't recognize my voice (or didn't pick it up). Thinking it might be a glitch my friend used it but for some reason it just doesn't work on me.
I have now tried every single possible solution that I can find on the hub, youtube and discord but nothing helps. Now I come here hoping someone can save me and help me keep enjoying this game, since playing without the ghosts being able to hear you is basically destroying the entire immersion.

Do you run your Steam as an Administrator? If so, Turn that off- Run steam without administrator mode, and check the test in the audio section of the options.

I had a similar problem, and so did my sister, And that was the fix, dumb as it sounds.

Search the discussions, this game issue has been brought up and resolved many times. It's happened to me, just fcked with audio and mic settings on my pc and it resolved, but not sure what actually did it.

What have you done so far to narrow down solutions?

Is windows speech recognition running? Is Phasmaphobia the active window or did you tab into Discord? Have you checked the sound settings to see if windows is trying to utilize another microphone?

See if your friends can hear your proximity chat instead of discord's voice channels.

If you are alt-tabbing from the game, this breaks mic recognition. You'll be audible to everyone, but ghost interactions will not work (voice box, etc.). Always click the icon in your task bar to return to the game - never alt-tab back in.

This is a known issue since forever and has yet to be fixed.

I thought about this but I literally touch nothing when I start up the game and it stills happens so I don't think this it the problem...

They can hear me in the lobby and ingame, not just discord.

You can try the alt tabbing fix, which is just hitting the windows key twice. Even though you say you are not tabbing out of the screen, it only takes a second to try the fix.

Tried again just now to no prevail. Just joined a server that does mic testing and I can clearly hear myself ingame but the voice rec still doesnt work. This really sucks that the game is this glitchy

It doesnt matter more often then not if your nmic is set as default in windows, that is the fix.

It's important to remember that everyone has a different setup and accounting for everything that can go wrong isn't easy. Plenty more people not having issues after all.

If you've already tried my other suggestions, well I just found this in Windows

  • Run Phasmaphobia
  • Tab-Out
  • Search for 'Sound Settings'
  • At the bottom under Advanced Sound Options, click on App Volume... Preferences
  • Look for Phasmaphobia...

What's the input? Specify it to your microphone. Especially ensure this is the case for Windows Speech Recognition (labeled Speech Recognition in this instance)

Beyond that solution, I diagnose your computer with aids and sentence it to a formatting. :VBCOOL:

If was labeled as standard and now I changed it to my microphone but still to no avail. Would be pretty cool if a dev or something could adress this problem in some way - but yeah guess phasmophobia is just having aids

And Windows Speech Recognition? I still haven't heard you refer to it, so I can't help but worry.

Have you or anyone else done anything weird to Windows since first running it, like trying to strip out it's telemetry etc? Maybe something weird is happening in your privacy settings.

ALSO have you tried the solutions in here?

Seems like some weird funky things like running Steam in admin. mode bugs it haha.

While you didn't directly give me an answer I will still give you credit. It seems that because my pc is on danish text etc then that messes up the entire speech recognition completetly. Now I changed the pc to english (british) and it seems to finally work. Thanks a lot :)
